ONE

A child. A life. A future. He remembered his thoughts from earlier in the evening when they watched their new daughter fall asleep … “until you have a child of your own . . . you’ll never know the joy, the love beyond feeling that resonates in the heart of a father as he looks upon his child. You’ll never know the sense of honor that makes a man want to be more than he is and to pass something good and hopeful into the hands of his child.”

Adam felt fulfilled. A smile crossed his lips as he lay in the darkness. He was a man. He was married. He was now a father of a precious angel and excitedly awaiting the birth from the union between him and Claire. How could his life any fuller?

Storms had been weathered and overcome by him and the woman who slept by his side. Her soft and even breathing bespoke of a comforting peace and joy. A comfort far removed from the anguish that had troubled them and their families.

In the darkness of this night, he turned his head toward the door as if he could see his angel. Earlier that day, Michelle Cartwright legally became their child. His life was changed and he felt something he was unable to explain.

Claire moved and the touch of her hand against his chest spoke to his heart. There was no way she could know the contentment she provided. The embers burning in the fireplace burned with the heat of love for his wife, their unborn child and their angel.

Tomorrow would come to all of them. In his minds eye Adam envisioned what life would be like in the days, weeks and years to come. He wanted to awaken his wife but thought better of it. He merely held her hand in his and stared at the ceiling.

Love had not come easily to him in his life. He had been in love, been hurt and lost. All of that had not easily been tossed aside during those times but he managed. Giving himself to Claire was whole, complete and total. He was able to bare his soul to himself and give love with fierceness he knew he couldn’t give if it were not for past hurts. Those earlier relationships were actually a road he had to travel. They would not have worked out. He understood that now.

Like a thief in the night, he had been robbed of the deepest, soul stirring love he owned. To continually be robbed in this way by the woman that he shared his bed with was a blessing that blocked out all else. He learned something about himself. No he thought, it was always there. It had risen to the surface and he wore it proudly for the world to see.

Claire moved. You will always be loved with an intensity I cannot explain he thought. He kissed her hand and slowly slid out of the bed. Putting on his robe he walked to the window and looked out. His angel would be meeting her family and this prospect excited him.

Remembering the years of his growing up had not truly prepared him to see himself as a father. Appreciation for his father overwhelmed him with responsibility he’d not known before. Responsibility of being a husband fulfilled him. He turned and looked at her. She was beautiful and growing more so each day as life grew within her. Gently he approached the bed and kissed his wife … his life.

Slowly and quietly he left their bedroom and walked across the hall. He gently opened the door and watched Michelle as she slept. Her tossed curls caressed the pillow. The teddy bear he’d given her had fallen free from her arms.

Adam tended to the fireplace to ensure her room remained warm. She was beautiful. Just a little over three years of age and his daughter. Pulling the disarrayed covers over her tiny frame, he knelt beside her and took her hand in his. His heart was full and thoughts came rushing to the forefront of his mind.

As I gaze upon your face, touch your hair and smell its sweet fragrance, look at your closed eyes and remember you calling me papa I am feeling your love for me. I am struck by how much life has in store for you. There are lessons that you must learn on your own and there are lessons that I hope I can teach you, to give you a firm foundation for whatever the years will bring.

I ask myself, what can I tell you about life, what things are important to know, what little bit of truth can I pass on? What can I write that will have meaning, if not now, then in the years to come?

Life is more interesting and richest when it includes people who are not exactly like you. Everyone is different; everyone has their own beliefs and values. Not everyone will accept this — ever. Be one of the ones who do.

Understand that life is unfair, you can’t change that. The idea of riding a pony may be a lot more fun than the ride itself. You don’t always get to know why life takes the turns it does. Things happen and there’s nothing you can do about some of it except persevere. Life does go gloriously onward. It’s important to mark the occasion, good or bad. Anniversaries, with their associated ceremonies and remembrances, are part of honoring the human experience.

Things happen for no reason. When you feel yourself getting upset/angry/frustrated, ask yourself, “How much will this really matter to me in a day? A week? A month?” Asking helps you gain perspective. Screaming will not get you there any faster. I know this for a fact. Socks need not match to keep little toes warm. Spilled milk can be wiped up. Books were not meant to be chewed on. Entertaining ourselves takes many forms which I hope to be a part of for now and always.

There’s no shame in admitting that you need help. Don’t be afraid to ask for it and don’t ‘be afraid to help someone who needs it. A lot of bad things happen in the world because people are afraid to get involved. Care about others and give them a hand when they need it. Sometimes all they need is a chance to help themselves and you can be the one enables that!

He stood and readjusted the covers. He turned to rejoin his wife. He was met with a loving smile. She had joined him.

TWO

There was no question the seasons had changed. The wind, blowing steadily from the southwest, announced the settling in of cold weather. It wouldn’t be brief. The stretch ahead wasn’t unfamiliar to any of the Cartwrights. They’d lived through Nevada winters and appreciated the down time. Although work still needed to be done, the level and intensity of it during this time of year was diminished greatly.

Shelley felt cold. She looked around her surroundings and wasn’t sure where she was. Her eyes, guided by her mind, searched for the plain walls that had been her haven. They weren’t there. She didn’t see the small table and chairs where she often sat. Missing also were the hooks that held her clothes. The one window she often peered out of was gone.

Her friend, the morning sun, had not appeared creating added confusion for her. She was alone in a space where the darkness outside blanketed her small corner of the world. Unable to understand, she was afraid. The teddy bear which had been her companion hours before lay a short distance from her. She reached out and held it to her as her heart beat faster.

She began to cry. Her childish thoughts were real to her. She was in a strange place and alone. She crawled out of bed and immediately shuddered when her feet met the cold floor. She started to shake and nature took over. Her tears continued to wet her cheeks and nature created a pool that wet her feet.

A final scare came out of the darkness. The wind howled violently without warning and caused Shelley to scream in terror.

Adrenalin pulsed through Adam as he tossed back the covers, grabbed his robe and rushed to Shelley’s room. Claire heard the screams as well and was right behind him.

Entering the room neither Claire nor Adam knew what to expect. Their concern was that she was alright. Both parents rushed to comfort and reassure her that they were there and she was fine. Claire embraced Shelley and quietly began to comfort her. She looked up at Adam in the dimly lit room and saw his concern.

“Shhhhh, Shelley,” said Claire. “We’re here and you’re going to be alright.”

Shelley continued to sob in her mother’s arms. Claire held her tighter and stroked her. Adam knelt down and took his child’s hand. He spoke with care and love.

“Shelley, you’re OK. We’ll never let anything happen to you. We love you and will always take care of you. Were you afraid?” He wondered if she understood him. He looked at Claire for some sign.

Peering over Claire’s shoulder Shelley looked at her father. Her sobs were ceasing when the wind once again pulsed past her window. This time a groaning sound accompanied it. Shelley jumped and screamed again. The answer Adam and Claire sought was made clear to them.

Claire felt the chill in the room but also felt something else – Shelley’s wet nightgown. She looked into Shelley’s face, wiped the tears away with her fingers and smiled. “I’m not going to leave you. I want you to be warm so I’m going to get you some dry clothing. OK?”

The large eyes understood. Adam took Shelley into his arms as Claire hurriedly went to get the dry clothing.

Shelley shook. Adam wasn’t sure if it was from being wet and cold or fear of the night and being in a new space. He believed the latter to be the case. There was work to be done.

“Shelley,” Adam said quietly. She looked directly at him and waited.

“It’s alright to be afraid. The wind is our friend but can scare us – just like tonight. The dark can scare us too. Sometimes I’m afraid and I need help. … just like you did tonight. When I’m afraid I ask for help and you should do that too … always ask for help.” He scratched the side of his head in hopes she understood him.

“Papa,” was all Shelley said as she leaned against him. Adam spied the wet spot on the floor and realized his daughter needed them.

“Mama and papa will keep you safe. We love you,” he said as Claire approached with dry clothing.

Shelley settled down while Claire went about changing her nightclothes. Adam picked up the teddy bear and left the room. When he returned, he looked at Claire and read her eyes.

With a broad smile on her face Claire said, “Shelley, we’re going to take you into our room for the rest of the night … but this is your room … you special place, and tomorrow night you’ll sleep here again. We won’t leave you alone.” Claire picked up Shelley and carefully walked past Adam. Adam went about cleaning the floor after they’d left. He didn’t want his daughter to feel embarrassed by what had happened.

When Adam joined Claire, he spotted four eyes looking directly at him. One pair was twinkling with contentment. The other pair was looking for understanding.

“Well now,” said Adam. Do you think there’s room in this bed for me? Shelley where do you think I can sleep?

Laughing and bouncing around Shelley chuckled and pointed with her finger, “Papa sleep here.” She pointed to a sliver of space left at the edge of the bed. Adam grinned and thought to himself, I’m glad it’s almost morning and I did get some sleep. Sleeping was going to be hard at best. The bed contained Claire, Shelley, the teddy bear and soon Adam.

“Ahh,” said Claire. “Before you remove your robe, I think you might want to consider our guests.”

Adam grinned knowingly and disappeared. He returned shortly and joined his family. If this is what being a father was all about, he was all for it … at least for the time being. Making himself comfortable, he felt the warmth of Shelley’s hand as she poked her little finger into his ear.

”Good night sweetheart. I love you.” Adam said with a sigh.

He received two responses. “Good night Adam,” said Claire.

“Night papa. Night mama.” Shelley moved to take all the space she could and when comfortable, fell quickly asleep. Claire marveled at how much space her small daughter could command.

Shelley and the teddy bear had taken the center of the bed along with having taken possession of their hearts. This was a night to remember.

The wind now was blowing gently and soothingly. Its mission was accomplished … a family and fuzzy guest bonding.

THREE

Claire stood gazing through the window watching Adam hitch up the carriage. She smiled to herself as he adeptly handled it. It appeared he was coming back into the house when she realized this was not the case. He’d placed throws on the porch which he now put into the carriage. Always thinking she thought. The turn of cold weather called for the additional warmth. Whistling, he turned and headed for the house.

The past few days had been a time of learning and understanding of what brings joy to life and its priorities for her and Adam. The time had also secured their plans for the future. Shelley had settled down and each day was growing more acclimated to her surroundings, her parents and making herself right at home.

Today was Saturday and a special day for all the Cartwrights. Shelley was going to meet her grandfather and uncles.

The door opened and Adam caught sight of his family preparing for the short ride to the Ponderosa. He placed his hat on the sideboard and watched as Claire assisted Shelley into her outwear. Rubbing his hands together he asked in a joyful voice, “Are we almost ready? Our carriage awaits.”

“It’ll be only a moment now,” Claire responded as she finished the last buttons on Shelley’s coat and secured her bonnet. “There now Shelley, you look quite wonderful. Mama has to get her things and we’ll be ready to leave.”

Adam was still aglow with the wonder of being a father. He’d been changed in a moment and each of those moments was opening his world to greater expectations of husband, father and the responsibilities that accompanied them. Helping Claire into her wrap and scarf, he kissed her cheek. With a twinkle in his eye he reached down to pick up Shelley and the trio departed to spend time with family.

The chill in the air was refreshing but Adam covered his family with the throws to secure their comfort. He reached for the reins and started the carriage toward the Ponderosa.

Today the breeze was light but still caressed each of them. The sound of the hoof beats seemed to echo as they moved along. There was nothing like riding across the beautiful countryside, nothing to compare with the exhilarating sense of fullness of this day. Even the horse seemed to understand the excitement. Adam felt connected to the past, stroked Shelley’s cheek and remembered the days when he was dependent upon his father.

As they reached the turn toward the Ponderosa, Claire said little as Adam carefully maneuvered the carriage, trying to make the ride as comfortable as possible. Claire breathed in the air and the pressures of times past remained behind her. There was only the cool air, the soft breeze, and the powerful rhythm of the horse’s powerful legs as he pulled the carriage across the Ponderosa.

Claire felt grounded in this place somehow – connected to the part of Nevada that never seemed to change. Somehow in this moment she knew this is where she was always meant to be. She instinctively breathed the air of her family, drank the same water, and rode across the terrain Adam and his family knew like the back of their hands. It gave her a sense of peace – peace she would never find anywhere else.

Shelley began bouncing for no apparent reason other than the fact she was enjoying the ride and with her parents. Adam had spoken to her over the past few days about his father and brothers and where they were going today. He had an affable way to gain Shelley’s interest and had shown her pictures of the family she was about to meet. Today was it and he hoped he’d done the job.

Claire turned to him and her eyes twinkled. She felt more rested today and was grateful. This was due partly to the fact she’d managed to ease Shelley back into her bedroom and thus was able to sleep comfortably with Adam. She wisely made it a point that Shelley could not become a fixture in the room she and Adam shared. There was progress to be made – but it was taking root.

The sun had risen to the noon hour but the temperatures were still cool. Within minutes they would be arriving for lunch. The last turn brought the family to a final stop. They’d reached their destination.

“Hey pa, they’re here!” shouted Joe.

Ben hastily made his way toward the door followed by Hoss.

Adam helped Claire from the carriage as the male Cartwrights rushed to meet them. In an excited voice Ben greeted Claire and embraced her. His look at her spoke volumes as his smile grew. Both Joe and Hoss did likewise.

“Claire you’re looking prettier each day,” Hoss commented as he took her arm.

She turned and watched as Adam lifted Shelley from the carriage. All eyes were on this scene. Ben only wished what he was seeing could be frozen in time. His heart was overflowing. His granddaughter.

Adam carried Shelley carefully toward the family. The eyes of Ben, Joe and Hoss were focused – focused on their new family member – focused on the happiness they felt inside which they contained for fear of the exhuberance frightening her.

“Good to see you pa. It’s a bit chilly out here. If we can go inside Claire and I would like to have you meet someone.”

“Ahh … of course,” said Ben excitedly. “Can’t tell you how we’ve been waiting for today.” He slapped Adam on the shoulder and ushered him into the house.

Joe smiled broadly and admired his older brother as he and Hoss escorted Claire inside.

The warmth of the great room was more than welcoming and the aroma of what Hop Sing had prepared for lunch was wafting throughout the house.

Putting Shelley down, she held on to her father’s leg and looked with sheepish eyes at the tall men standing before her. Adam felt her arms tightening around his leg and her head pressing against him. Claire removed her wrap and joined Adam. She knelt down next to Shelley and took her hand.

The eyes looked at her mother and saw the warm smile. Claire looked up to Adam. As man of their family. He would make the introductions.

“Claire and I wish to introduce you to our daughter, your granddaughter and niece, Michelle Cartwright. We call her Shelley,” Adam said proudly. He promptly knelt down to be on eye level with her.

The three Cartwright men were mesmerized by the presence of this little person. They could quickly understand how a heart could be confiscated and locked with affection for her.

“Shelley,” Adam said softly. “This is your grandpa Ben. This is your Uncle Joe, and this is your Uncle Hoss.” He removed from his inside coat pocket the photo he’d been showing Shelley over the last days to pre-acquaint here with today’s meeting.

Shelley looked at the photo and then at the three men. She did this several times as Ben, Joe and Hoss waited to welcome her. They were aware she was not thoroughly comfortable and didn’t want to upset her. It was all they could do to contain themselves.

Her little finger pointed to the picture her father held. “Papa,” she said as she pointed to the picture.

“Yes, papa,” Adam replied.

Ben’s heart turned over hearing his son called papa. Joe and Hoss were likewise touched.

“People,” Shelley said as her fingers moved across the picture. She then turned and stared. Pointing to Ben, Joe and Hoss, she released her hold on Adam and pointed, “People.”

Adam kissed her cheek and said, “I think it’s time to say hello to people.”

Shelley looked to her mother for assurance and as always found it. Claire removed Shelley’s hat and coat and Adam ushered her over.

The scene following was one to remember. The three Cartwright men bent down to Shelley’s level.

“Shelley I’m so glad to meet you. I’m so glad to have you as my granddaughter … and … “ Ben had to contain his emotions before continuing. “I love you and …” He pulled her to him and laughed with joy feeling the warmth of Shelley next to him. His heart was full. He wanted to shout but didn’t want to frighten her. He kissed her on the cheek and noticed through the eyes that peered at him the beautiful soul she cotained. Adam, Claire and Elizabeth. Yes, his heart was full.

Next it was time to meet Joe and Hoss. Joe was literally on his knees and handed her a wrapped package. She looked at him pointing her finger, “Picture,” she smiled. Joe looked at the expression on Adam’s face and said, “Yes, picture. I’m Joe … err … Uncle Joe.” He hugged her and was completely won over.

“Shelley,” Hoss called quietly.

She looked at him. He was sitting on the coffee table and stretched out his hands to her as he said her name. She looked back at her parents and then slowly walked over to Hoss. He immediately picked her up and sat her on his lap.

“I’m your Uncle Hoss and I’m right happy to finally meet you,” he said as he tweaked her nose with his finger. “No need to be scared, sugar. We’re all family … all of us and that includes you.” He tweaked her nose again.

Shelley looked around and a twinkle returned to her eyes. They were her picture. With a smile she took her little finger and poked Hoss’s nose.

“Ah Hoss I should tell you that Shelley likes to use her finger to poke people and things,” Adam laughed.

Hoss replied, “Why Adam. Don’t you know poking is the best way to find out things?” he laughed as he gave her a hug. It seemed the breadth of his arms almost engulfed all of Shelley.

Congratulations were made all around. What had been a quiet meeting of family now turned into a raucous union and celebration.

Ben’s hug and congratulation with Claire was emotional. He then saw the joy in his son’s eyes and instead of shaking his hand pulled Adam to him. Father and son had reached another milestone in their personal relationship as they hugged.

Joe whooped it up a bit letting out his controlled excitement and let Adam and Claire feel his happiness for them. “I’m an uncle,” he said joyfully as he slapped his brother on the arm and hugged Claire.

“Whoo! Whoo! Whoo!” came from Shelley who was jumping up and down. She was copying Joe’s sounds and his jumping. Laughter took over.

Hoss, the ever sensitive one, looked at Adam with misty eyes. “Adam … I … I … can’t say anything but I couldn’t be happier for you and Claire. I …”

Adam just looked lovingly at his brother and they shared a bear hug. They really didn’t need to say anything.

Hoss took Claire’s arm and escorted her to the seat by the fire. “Gotta say Claire, she’s special. Plum special.”

Claire simply looked back and replied, “I know. Just like this family.”

FOUR

The afternoon spent at the Ponderosa was an event. It was a period of reflection for Ben … of times long past. His heart was full and he rapidly changed into a grandfather mode. After all, he’d waited more years than he could count for this moment. There was no question that Shelly Cartwright was going to be spoiled.

The glint never left Hoss’s eyes nor had the grin left Joe’s face. The parents carefully watched while their daughter explored the nooks and crannies of the great room, always keeping her parents within eye range.

“You two are her sense of security,” Ben said looking across the room. “If your two brothers have their way, she’d be kept right here at the Ponderosa.” No truer words had been spoken.

Adam inquired if Claire wanted anything. His gentle tone resonated with affection. She assured him she was fine. Quiet conversation regarding the adoption was orchestrated by Adam. Claire had become the soloist and Ben, Joe and Hoss the audience. A curtain call was commanded for a special person – Hop Sing.

“Where’s Hop Sing?” asked Claire. “After all he’s a part of this family and we do have a unique bond.”

“He’s in the kitchen and we’ve been given strict orders not to disturb him. Seems he’ll be out to greet you when he’s done with whatever concoction he’s working on,” Joe responded.

“Ahh. I see you and Hoss are still banned from the kitchen,” laughed Adam as he stroked Claire’s shoulder.

In defense of his two sons Ben chimed in. “Let’s just say that they’ve learned to give Hop Sing his space.”

Changing the subject Hoss said. “Claire you’re looking just great. You’re just blossoming like a flower.”

“I’d be hard pressed to wonder what type of flower in the middle of winter,” she said as she looked at her expanded waistline.

Hoss swallowed hard as Joe rapped him on the arm. What Hoss meant as a compliment seemed not to acknowledge Claire’s healthy glow but rather her healthy girth.

“Claire, I … uh …. well what I meant to say was …” he swallowed hard again.

“It’s OK Hoss. I know exactly what you meant,” she smiled. “Now I think I’ve waited much too long.” She rose from the chair and stated she was headed for the kitchen. “Adam will you keep an eye on Shelley?”

“Don’t worry about anything Claire,” spouted Hoss. “Us men can handle little bits.”

“Well if you can I think you’d better get to it. She’s very good at stairs.”

Adam quickly turned to see Shelley heading up the stairs – one by one.

“Stay put Adam,” Hoss said almost as a command.” Adjusting his belt he said, “Uncle Hoss is on the way.”

“Well you better hurry up Uncle Hoss before she falls and hurts herself,” Joe said as he pointed his finger.

Claire peeked around the corner into the kitchen. She saw her dear friend tasting something and then saying something in Chinese.

Claire entered and felt as if she were at home. “Anything I can help you with Hop Sing?”

He turned with a start and said, “Missy Claire! I so happy to see you. Always heart fill with joy when I see you.”

“I’m happy to see you Hop Sing. Thank you for preparing lunch for us.”

“Please – you come sit. Not good for you to stand.”

Claire obliged him but countered, “I’m perfectly fine. There’s no need to fuss over me.”

“I not fuss. I just being Hop Sing.”

Claire merely thought – that you are you dear man.

“I also not ignore you and Mista Adam. Just need to finish this last pot. Could not leave it for minute. Everything ready now.”

“Fine then,” said Claire as she walked to Hop Sing to give him a hug.
As always, he was touched by her caring ways.“

I be out soon. Meet daughter. Can’t wait. Mista Ben been pain in neck all day waiting.”

Claire laughed. She returned to look at the table where lunch would be served. Neatly placed were five place settings and a special smaller plate and utensils. Quietly speaking with Ben, he smiled in agreement. Adam wondered what his father and wife were plotting.

Claire dutifully reached into the cupboard, removed what she needed and proceeded to rearrange the table a bit. She added a place setting.

There was some neighing by Hoss as he pretended to be a horse. Joe followed him to ensure that Shelley didn’t fall. Instead of one child there were now three and they couldn’t be having more fun.

Knowing Shelley was pretty well adjusted to his brothers, Adam went in search of Claire. Poking his head into the kitchen, he saw Claire licking her lips after tasting something from Hop Sing’s spoon.

“Are we all going to get some or is it just going to be Claire?” Adam chided.

“Mista Adam. I happy for you. New daughter and maybe son or maybe daughter soon.” Adam knew the happiness expressed was heartfelt. He just needed to greet the man who still worked for the Cartwrights, although, he’d threatened to quit so often.

“Stop whatever you’re doing and come with me,” Adam said. “There’s a new Cartwright for you to meet.”

Sheepishly Hop Sing looked at Claire and Adam as he wiped his hands and removed his apron. Smiling he said, “Hop Sing look OK now?”

“Come on,” said Adam as he put his hand on his shoulder and escorted him into the great room.

The sight Hop Sing saw caused him to ramble in Chinese. He hurried to the far side of the great room, which was out of the line of view for Ben, and immediately spouted orders.

“Stop! Stop Now!”

Joe’s mouth dropped open and Hoss, who was on all fours, looked up. Adam removed Shelley from Hoss’s back and joined Claire.

“You two have no sense. No bucking horse in house with little child. You make sick and she can’t eat.”

“We were just giving her a little ride and having some fun,” Joe said in defense.

“Little child is girl. She not boy.”

“We didn’t know we could make her sick. We really didn’t,” Hoss said as he stood up.

Ben joined Claire and Adam to hear to lecture, which, fortunately was being given in English. Shelley’s eyes widened as she looked in the direction of Hop Sing. Wriggling, Adam allowed her to get down.

Shelley immediately went toward Hop Sing who was still lecturing. He felt something poking his leg. It was Shelley. She looked up at him and he smiled. He bowed and said, “Honorable child – my heart is warm to welcome you to this house. I am Hop Sing.”

She continued to look at the man who had interrupted her horse ride. Reaching for his hand, Hop Sing allowed her to take it. She pulled him toward Hoss and said, “Horse.”

Hop Sing glared at Hoss and then Joe. “Time to eat.” Smiling he walked hand in hand with Shelley toward the dining room. There was something special about this person. Hop Sing looked at Shelley with a full heart and misty eyes.

The next act touched Hop Sing deeply. Pointing to herself she said, “ Shelley.” Pointing to Hop Sing she said, “People.”

“Well, if you two ruffians don’t mind, I do believe lunch is ready. The very idea of being a bucking bronco with MY granddaughter. What were you thinking?” asked Ben.

Hoss swallowed hard for the third time and Joe just shrugged his shoulders.

Hop Sing had not only set a smaller plate and utensils for Shelley, but had managed to pile her chair with pillows. As he sat the last of the meal of the table, Claire spoke up.

“Hop Sing. This is a family time. You have a place at this table. Please sit down.”

The look on Adam’s face after hearing Claire’s words confused him.

“We can’t eat today unless we’re all in our places. We’re waiting for you Hop Sing,” welcomed Ben.

Although the afternoon sun had been shadowed by the grayness of the winter, the brightness of it shown on Hop Sing’s face. Another moment in time to be captured.

Ben said grace and the feasting on delicious food started. It was a lively meal. Ben was exuberant throughout. Joe winked at Shelley and she picked up the whistle he gave her and started to blow it.

Hoss laughed with zest.

Claire removed it from her hand and explained she couldn’t play with it when eating. The expression on Shelley’s face changed to a frown. Before his father or brothers could come to Shelley’s defense, Adam raised his eyebrow. There would be no defense for her. It was over … at least for now. Claire merely lowered her head and continued to eat.

“Hey Hop Sing, this is really delicious,” spouted Joe.

Hop Sing didn’t respond immediately. “Is something wrong Hop Sing? Don’t like your own cooking?” asked Hoss.

“Hop Sing very good cook. Just see little one and thinking.”

“Care to share what you’re thinking?” quizzed Adam.

“Just a Chinese saying,” he responded. “A child’s life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark.”

The eyes were focused first on Hop Sing, then Shelley and then Claire. His few words spoke volumes. He then grinned and helped himself to more of his cooking.

Adam took Claire’s hand in his. They both understood what their dear friend was saying.

The visit was much too short to suit Ben but Claire explained the need to return home and allow Shelley to nap. If the truth was told, she herself was feeling tired. Hoss brought the carriage around for their departure while Claire helped Shelley into her hat and coat.

Ben stopped his son. There was a lot he wanted to say, however the afternoon hadn’t provided the opportunity. He merely displayed a large smile as he kissed Claire goodbye. He bent down to Shelley and asked a hug for her grandpa. She slowly scrunched up her face and obliged.

The farewells were short because the temperatures had dropped quite drastically.

“Hurry and get them home son, it’s getting much to cold,” Ben shivered.

Adam’s response was, “We’ll talk pa.” Looking at his brothers he said, “The door is open for uncles.”

Before they left, Hop Sing handed Claire a package and said, “Great souls have wills; feeble ones have only wishes.” Before she could thank him he hurried off into the house.

The ride home could not be fast enough. Claire urged Adam to hurry and stated he could ignore the ruts in the road … at least most of them. Shelley rested against Claire and shared the warmth beneath the throws.

A twinkle shone in Adam’s eyes as he adjusted the collar of his coat. The temperatures would change over time. The family bonding was going to last a lifetime.

* * * * * * * *

Ben always hoped the love for the land would never skip a generation. Even though Adam had been east, educated and had unspoken desires, he prayed Adam felt the love in his blood. The life was not an easy one. The work was hard. The days were long. The rewards? … many. He shook his head and turned his face toward the hearth. The warmth of the fire and the day lulled him to a comfortable sleep.

Milling about in the barn Joe called, “Hoss what are you looking for? You’re making a mess and we just got things looking pretty good.”

“Never you mind little brother. Just keep tending them animals.”

Joe frowned and continued what he was doing.

“Found it!” exclaimed Hoss. “Thought it might be here.”

“What? Found what?”

“Joe don’t you remember? This here sled. Kinda beat up but with a little spit and polish should be good as new.”

Joe was surprised at the treasure Hoss found. “This is great! Boy we sure had some great times with this.”

“Yeah,” laughed Hoss. “Especially when you were about nine years old and …..”

“… and you pushed the sled before I was ready and I ended up hitting a tree,” reminisced Joe.

“Yep. This is gonna be right fine,” Hoss said as he continued to examine the sled.

“Are you listening to me? Hoss!”

“Ah, oh yeah Joe. I heard you. Busted open your head, pa tanned me and this here sled was off limits for the rest of the winter.”

A smile crossed Joe’s face as he caught sight of the gleam in Hoss’s eyes. Joe rubbed his hands together and said, “Well what are we waiting for?”

Laughing like little boys again, they were going to fix the family sled for Shelley.

The next few weeks were like a see-saw but not unexpected. Adjustments were the measure of trial and error, patience and understanding, knowledge versus the lack of knowledge, and stamina. Claire was determined worry was not to become part of her vocabulary.

The weather remained cold but the Nevada wind had ceased. Over the previous two weeks Claire’s Aunt Maggie and Uncle Hank visited twice not to mention quick stops by Ben, Hoss and Joe. Shelley was the center of attention and adapting to others besides Adam and Claire.

While Claire was finishing up the supper dishes, Adam held Shelley in his lap reading her a story. He found he could master the art of giving her a bath, at least at this age, and dressing her for bed. The bath and story time was a break for Claire. Her pregnancy was advancing and he was determined to help ease her load.

“OK you two. It’s time for someone to go to bed,” Claire said softly.

“So soon?” smiled Adam.

Claire folded her arms over her fullness and gave a look.

“Ok sweetheart. Mama says its time for bed.”

Shelley scooted down with her teddy bear and rushed toward Claire.

As had become the nightly ritual, they both accompanied Shelley to her room and tucked her in. Shelley was fast learning the prayer Claire was teaching her, and when finished, accepted kisses and would quickly scoot further under the covers. This night she was asleep before they knew it.

Leaving her door slightly ajar, Adam followed Claire into their bedroom. As she prepared for bed, he tended to their fireplace. Claire looked at herself in the mirror. She was ‘blossoming’. Adam joined her and placed his arms around her. He kissed her hair and neck and said her name.

She loved these moments they spent together and each now fed the other with their kisses. Adam felt warm but it wasn’t from the fire.

“Tired?” he asked with half closed eyes.

“No.” she responded. “I just think it’s time we got into bed.”

The gentleness of their union was as if it was their first time – yet each was being fulfilled beyond measure.

A few weeks passed and the weather proved to be true to the time of year. Snow had been falling on and off during this period. It provided the perfect opportunity for sledding as two grown up little boys were racing around the Ponderosa.

“Whoa there. Where are you two going?” shouted Ben.

“We’re off to Adam’s pa,” Joe answered. “The sled is all fixed up and it couldn’t be a better day for a sled ride.”

“I see … and I suppose a snowball fight as well?” he said with raised eyebrows.

“Well now that you mention it, that might just be fun,” smiled Hoss.

The snow was passable. Ben smiled and shook his head as he watched his two little boys ride off with the sled trailing behind them.

Claire had begun to feel a bit of cabin fever. She really wanted to get out and breathe in the air … not just stand on the porch watching Adam and Shelley build a snowman or rolling in the snow, but being able to take a walk on nature’s blanket.

She put aside the sewing she’d been working on. Little by little she was crafting items for the baby and storing them. She’d watched with care as her aunt made similar items for her cousin’s baby and just as lovingly did the same. Adam particularly enjoyed watching her in the evenings when Shelley was in bed. She worked with love on the tiny items.

The fullness of time would never empty if he could help it. The two of them had come a long way. The beauty of her flourishing fed his male pride. After all, he was a man and he’d planted the seed of this new life. Waiting was more than an idea. It was a reality. He drank in every aspect of it as if he were drinking fine wine. This time in their lives and the presence of the woman he loved with life growing, was savored time and again.

This night she looked at the man resting in the chair with his eyes closed. She felt a slight movement and thought, our child.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Adam and Shelley were frockling in the snow. The sound of Adam’s laughter was more than heartwarming.

The sound of music floated outside. Adam stopped for a moment and then looked at Shelley. Claire played piano each day and had begun to create some of her own pieces. He marveled at her talent but also the way she tended to their home, him and Shelley. He knew it wasn’t easy for her and wanted to do more. The blessing was that it was almost the end of winter. Had it been warmer weather or summer, he most assuredly would be out working his ranch.

The sound of stomping on the porch announced the return of her family. Briskly brushing the snow off, Adam opened the door and felt the warmth of the house. Adam assisted Shelley out of her things. Claire took them and put them aside to warm and dry. Adam rubbed hands together and watched as Claire walked into the kitchen. He wondered what he could do as an expectant father for her. He rubbed the side of his head and decided he’d ask.

Shelley was trying to open the door. She hadn’t wanted to come in and had whined. Adam put a stop to it in a gentle way but realized once again, she had a bit of temper. It was one thing to love this child with all one’s heart. But loving the child meant rules in place and not accepting poor behavior. He and Claire had talked about this.

Claire had made hot cocoa and cookies. She placed them on the table and called her family into the kitchen.

Shelley climbed into her seat and Claire stroked her hair. Cheeks still rosy from the cold, Shelley accepted the cookie from her father.

Adam looked at Claire as he began to nibble his cookie.

“It looks wonderful outside,” she said. “Just like a picture.”

Adam knew what he could do for Claire but wasn’t sure how. “Ummm, I’d not thought of it that way but you’re right,” he said as he swallowed. “What’s so funny?”

Claire responded, “You. Your nose and ears are still a little red. If I didn’t know you’d been out in the snow I’d say you had a snoot full.” She laughed and Shelley joined her. Claire’s laughter was warm and Adam could listen to it for ever.

Finishing up their cookies and cocoa, Claire helped Shelley down. It was time for Shelley’s nap. The tiredness could be seen in her eyes. Claire took her to relieve herself and then headed toward the stairs.

Adam met them at the foot of the stairs. He hugged Shelley and wished her a nice rest. He looked at Claire and told her she was beautiful and he loved her.

“I don’t think it’ll be long before our little camper is fast asleep,” Claire said as she made her way up the stairs.

Adam helped himself to a book from the shelf and wandered into the kitchen for another cookie. The sound of voices caught his attention. He saw the ‘uncles’ and smiled as his eyes focused on the ‘sled’.

Opening the door, he rested is hand on his hip as he waited for them to dismount and make their way inside.

“Well, let me guess. You two have either lost your way or pa has thrown you out of the house,” Adam said sarcastically.

“Very funny,” replied Joe as he kicked the snow off his boots.”

“Hey big brother,” Hoss said cheerfully. “We just came to play uncle. Where’s our little one?”

Closing the door behind them, Adam replied. “Your timing is wrong. Claire has just put Shelley down for her nap.”

The excited look on their faces disappeared. “I forgot about the nap thing,” Joe offered.

Adam realized their disappointment but smiled. “Take your things off and come into the kitchen. Claire has some hot cocoa and cookies if you’d like some.”

The offer didn’t need to be made a second time.

“How are things going pa?” laughed Hoss in a teasing fashion.

Ignoring Hoss’s question, Adam asked, “How long can you stay?”

Joe looked up from his plate quizzically. “You need something Adam? We can stay as long as you want. Whatever you need you got.”

“Besides we didn’t lug that sled all the way over here not to see it get used,” replied Hoss.

Adam sighed. “I’d like to get Claire out of the house. I think she might enjoy a walk in the snow.”

It was all arranged. The uncles would be the babysitters for the next little while.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

It was a beautiful day for a walk. Adam ensured Claire was warmly bundled. The uncles watched as their brother took as gentle care with her as little bits. The door closed behind them leaving smiles on their faces.

“We’ve not taken a walk together for quite a while,” Adam said quietly as he held her hand.

“I know. It’s so beautiful out here. Thank you Adam.”

“Thank Mother Nature.”

Their feet moved slowly and almost in sync. The soft white crystals were a carpet that covered any direction they chose. Claire took in a deep breath and smiled. “How’d you know this is what I needed?”

“It wasn’t hard,” Adam responded as held secured his hold on her. “I needed this as well.”

The day was amazing – sunny and crisp with not a cloud in the sky. The walk through Nature’s blanket was unbelievable for the two of them and had a calming effect. Everything seemed embellished. The sound of the crush of snow underfoot, watching snow fall from the tall pines as a bird flew away – so peaceful.

Adam guided her around areas where light patches of snow covered ice.

They’d not ventured too far from the house but far enough to look at a spectacular view. Claire leaned against him and took it all in.

“It’s so beautiful … such a promise of life and God’s gifts for us to love.”

Adam said nothing but held her and listened to the sounds … the sounds of Nature … quiet, quiet Nature.

“Oh!” exclaimed Claire with a smile. She placed her gloved hand on her stomach.

“What is it Claire?”

“Our baby. It just kicked me. I think he or she is enjoying this walk as well.”

Adam covered her gloved hand with his but Claire readjusted his hand. He tried to see her eyes but she was looking down. “Let’s wait a minute,” Claire said in almost a whisper.

Adam’s warm breath was writing his thoughts in the coolness of the afternoon as he waited. It wasn’t long. Claire shifted her weight against him and then he felt a forceful kick. Adam broke the quiet with excited laughter. Claire joined him. It was a glorious experience.

“We’ve a lot to face Adam,” Claire said as she turned and walked a few feet in the other direction.

“Oh?”

“Yes oh, and you know it. You’ve not been a father and I’ve not been a mother before. There’s so much to know. I just wonder if we’re doing things right.”

Adam understood her concerns. He had them as well. “What do you suggest Mrs. Cartwright?”

Claire’s eyes mildly showed her concern. “I can only think of this period, especially with Shelley, as a period of trial and error. She had some issues which we don’t fully understand and perhaps never will … but”

Adam leaned against a tree. Light snow fell on him. “… But we’ll learn together. We can only follow our hearts and set proper examples. Trial and error for first time parents sounds about right to me.”

“Adam you’re just so matter of fact.”

“I thought you liked that about me.” His tone changed from teasing to caring. “The fact of the matter is that all aspects of our new life are changing.” He approached her and looked gently into her eyes. What he wanted to say he couldn’t. It was a hidden fear.

He kissed her and held her. “I could stay here with you forever.”

“I think we’d freeze to death.”

He laughed slightly and said, “What we don’t know we’ll learn. If it’s too difficult then we’ll ask.”

Claire removed one of her gloves so she could feel his face. Her touch was a way of saying she understood.

“Ah Claire, we aren’t the only parents to go through a case of nerves and wondering if we’re doing the things we ought. We’ll look back on this one day and laugh at ourselves.”

She knew he was probably right. If anything, she knew she could depend on him.

She bent down and picked up some snow. “You know when I was a child in St. Louis I would love to play in the snow. I’d stay outside as long as I could. One of the things I became good at was THIS!” In that moment she tossed a perfectly crafted snowball and hit Adam smack in the chest.

“Lady are you trying to start a war?”

“I think I already have,” she laughed. Her laughter echoed into the air providing joy of life to their surroundings.

Adam, in turn tossed a snowball at Claire. He deliberately missed because he was afraid to hit her. Had she not been carrying his child, there would have been no way she would win.

The tossing of the snowballs continued as they moved closer to the house. Time together was what each needed. Claire held had one last snowball Adam was not aware of. She saw the icy patch but said nothing. In a split second Adam had fallen flat onto Nature’s carpet. Claire laughed and hit the target with perfect aim.

Adam dusted himself off and said, “Lady, you won’t always be this lucky.”

Claire just laughed as she held her sides. Adam put his hat back on and mumbled.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Joe and Hoss had their turn in the snow with Shelley. Adam couldn’t imagine his brothers coasting down one slope and rolling in the snow. If nothing else, they were getting their exercise and Shelley being treated to a new experience.

Over the next couple of weeks, more snow had fallen. Claire could almost tell when Joe and Hoss would show up. It was fun and those days turned into times Adam would take her out for walks. One day he spied her watching Shelley on the sled with a smile on her face. He walked over to her and said, “Don’t even think about it.”

SIX

Adam had put off the conversation he wanted to have with his father. He and Claire shared more than any two could. That closeness was what his father told him would come. So much he’d never felt he could openly share with his father and brothers had been so easily shared with her. Doors he’d closed throughout his life she’d been able to open for him. She’d provided the freedom he needed. Certain of his fears had been washed away as if by a virgin rain. It was purifying for him.

The reverse could be said for Claire. Through all she’d faced, it was Adam’s strength, courage and love that helped her. He was a strong man and had borne more than any man should have had to. He never spoke of the deep pain he experienced through her trials but gave of himself over and over again – as if he were more than human.

Yet through all of this, a nagging worry hung heavy for him. He refused to call it by its true name …fear.

Shelley was adjusting, perhaps too quickly, to her parents and family. She was a handful and loved the care and attention. Establishing a new foundation to replace the unknown circumstances surrounding Shelley’s beginnings was proving to be more of a mystery … one that Claire and Adam tried to dismiss as they started their own beginning … but it still lived. Moving away from it proved hard at times.

On the other hand, the mysteries of her surroundings were a challenge for Shelley. Yes, she received attention and thrived on it, perhaps because it had been lacking in her young life. She was a package of energy and explored every aspect of her environment. Being quiet and still was not part of her makeup … at least at this stage in her life. An eye had to be kept on her and her activities … she was always busy.

Before formally adopting Shelley, Claire and Adam sought all information regarding the child’s health and possible reasons for her refusing to talk. Clearly she had the capability, but she had refused. The relationship that developed between Shelley and her ‘new’ parents seemed to erase what had halted her voice and words began to flow. Her vocabulary was limited at best, but was developing more and more with the help of her parents.

Shelley had been corrected several times during the week for doing things that weren’t appropriate. In each case, either Adam or Claire would explain the reason it wasn’t appropriate and then try to channel her interests in other things.

Today, Adam stopped her from pulling papers off his desk. He spoke to her in his gentle manner yet was stern. She just looked at him. Adam sensed she knew she’d done wrong. When he tried to kiss her, she pulled away and sat on the settee hugging her teddy bear. Attempts to engage her in conversation were not successful.

Claire became concerned and worried. Adam was uncertain why this behavior, but tried to assure Claire it was just Shelley’s way of being stubborn and there was nothing actually wrong with her.

His explanation was half heard by Claire. He didn’t want any added pressures on Claire, particularly at this time in her pregnancy.

“Claire I know you’re worried,” he said tenderly. “She’s a child in adjustment. We knew there would be some challenges for us.” Adam was careful in his choice of words – particularly by choosing the word ‘we’ and ‘us’.

Claire placed her hand on the one resting on her shoulder. “I just want her to feel safe and secure … to be able to grow up as a happy and healthy child and feel the love we have for her.”

“We both do,” Adam said as he looked at Shelley from the distance. “I’ve come to the conclusion that she chose not to speak because she was not a happy child.”

Claire turned and looked into eyes of wisdom. “You really believe that?”

“Yes, I do,” Adam said with a half grin on his face. “It’s hard to know what a child thinks or feels … but I honestly believe she was unhappy … didn’t feel she had security and consistency in her life.”

“I want her to be happy and know how much she’s loved,” Claire said almost tearfully.

“Of course you do. But think about how far she’s come. She’s being given rules and being shown there are consequences for her actions. When she’s been corrected she becomes unhappy … at least for a little while. Today she was unhappy when I stopped her. She’s sulking and has decided not to talk. It won’t last long sweetheart.”

“I hope so Adam. I don’t know how to handle this,” Claire shared.

“I think you do. Most of it has to do with the love you give so warmly. She’ll grow out of this with our help. She’s going to be a fine and wonderful person. This is something we all have to weather together.”

Claire looked at Shelley who just sat playing with her teddy bear. Claire walked away from Adam and started to busy herself in the kitchen.

Adam sighed and hoped he was right. He heard the sniffle and turned. Claire was wiping plates with an intensity he’d not seen. He walked over and removed the plate and towel from her hands as her frustration began to show itself through the tears she was beginning to shed.

The caring action of Adam opened the floodgates and emotions flowed as Claire held Adam crying as if her heart was broken. Thoughts floated through his mind. Was the adoption of Shelley during Claire’s pregnancy too much for her? Was she completely healed from the turmoil she’d been through with Andy Wales and his trying to kill her? Was she feeling the strain of the pregnancy? Was she trying to do too much?

Adam said nothing but allowed Claire to empty her sadness on him. He closed his eyes and wished he knew what to do.

Claire composed herself and looked at Adam with reddened eyes. “I’m sorry Adam. I don’t know what’s come over me.”

“Shhhhh,” Adam said as he placed his finger over her lip and kissed her. “There’s nothing for you ever to apologize for.”

Claire sniffed and said, “I guess Doctor Martin and Aunt Maggie were right.”

Releasing her slightly, Adam looked at her puzzled.

“They told me being pregnant changes the way a woman reacts and emotions run rampant often affecting those closest to her. I guess this was a case of that.”

“Ummm. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I was wondering why I’d been feeling strange emotions,” Adam said trying to lighten the situation.

Claire couldn’t contain herself. She had more tears to empty. Adam knew this would pass and wouldn’t leave her until it had. He’d then have a talk with Doctor Martin when he came to check on Claire and perhaps one with Aunt Maggie. Whatever he could understand to help Claire he needed to know … after all the next few months he had to live through as well. He smiled to himself and scratched his ear.

Adam whistled as he looked over the plans for their home. Grateful was not the word he was looking for. He was more than pleased with the amount of work already completed. Signs of warmer weather had not made their presence known, but it wouldn’t be too long before he’d be able to get to work again. He was anxious.

Claire seemed moody a little more frequently and her tears, which she tried to hide, were not a well kept secret. Added to her emotions, she was beginning to experience some lower back discomfort.

This day she had blocked off the stairs to keep Shelley in check, broke a set of goblets, cut her finger, couldn’t seem to get organized to prepare dinner, and felt overly fat, not to mention tired.

Shelley pulled her mother’s skirt asking for something to drink. Claire sighed and slowly moved to get it. Shelley was once again her jabbering self. Her period of self-imposed silence had ended for the time being. The exuberance Shelley displayed was heartwarming for Claire. She wished she had that much energy today.

Extending the drink to Shelley proved to be a mistake. As Shelley jumped up and down waiting for her refreshment, she bumped into the hand holding the drink. It was just a split second until the cup and its contents landed on Claire’s freshly washed floor.

Shelley’s eyes widened at the lost drink and her ears peaked hearing her mother’s voice, “Shelley!”

Although Claire had not yelled, Shelley could hear the stern sound. Claire retrieved a cloth and bent down to clean the soiled floor. Looking up at her diminutive daughter she said, “I’m sorry but you shouldn’t jump in the house. Now please sit down while I clean this up and I’ll get you another drink.”

Wide eyes watched as Claire began to wipe the floor and also wipe her eyes. The little feet went to find her papa.

“Well, have you come to help me?” Adam asked with extended arms.

Shelley shook her head and pointed. “Mama cry.”

Adam’s expression changed. He rose from the desk and with Shelley in tow entered the kitchen. Claire was finishing cleaning the floor and tried to ignore Adam. Shelley raced and threw her arms around her mother. Claire embraced her and the tears flowed.

Adam felt a pang in his heart. Separating the two women in his life, he sat Shelley on a chair and helped Claire up. He realized that it was getting harder for Claire to manage and she needed a break.

“What’s wrong Claire?”

Wiping her eyes with her apron she looked at Shelley and smiled. “I’m fine … really. I’m just feeling overwhelmed at the moment. It’s silly but I can’t seem to get anything right today.” She smiled again to try to reassure Shelley she was fine.

Adam placed his arm around her shoulder. “Come with me,” he said as he motioned Shelley to stay put.

“Adam really there’s no need ….”

“There’s every need,” he said as he sat her on the settee and pulled up a footstool.

Holding her hand he said, “Now you can stay here, take a nap or whatever you want. I’m taking charge of the household today and that includes getting Shelley down for her nap and making dinner. At least one of those I can handle pretty well.”

Claire realized Adam’s words were more of a command than recommendation.

“You’re wellbeing is important. Our baby is important. Shelley is important. Your emotions may not be in check and I believe I understand that. You can be sure that Shelley and I will be in check. So why don’t you accept my offer and let us take care of things for a while? Ummm?”

Adam wiped the last vestiges of tears from Claire’s eyes and she smiled.

“Well then it’s settled.” He kissed her and then headed toward the kitchen. “Where’s my girl?” he asked.

Claire could hear him laughing and knew he was lifting Shelley up and down and swinging her around. She was relieved and thankful.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Adam was not as adept in the kitchen as Claire and was no comparison for Hop Sing. He did manage to get lunch for Shelley and Claire and then took Shelley up for her nap. He secretly hoped Claire would do the same.

He remained until Shelley fell asleep and passing their bedroom saw Claire.

“Mrs. Cartwright I think you’re making a wise decision.”

“And what might that decision be?” queried Claire.

“I suspect you’re going to lie down and rest for awhile.”

Adam noticed a hint of embarrassment on Claire’s face as she was trying to settle herself. He also noticed a bit of a grimace on her face.

Lovingly her walked over and sat next to her. “I’d like you to get some rest. Remember I’m in charge.”

Claire smiled and said, “Have I ever told you that you can be hard to live with?”

“No, but I’m sure you can explain that to me when we’re old and gray.” He looked at the tiredness that engulfed Claire and kissed her. “Now let me help you settle in for your nap.”

As Claire turned and started to recline, she moaned. Adam took notice. “Here, let me get an extra pillow for you. Is it your back?”

“Yes. I have some lower back pain today. Guess it goes with the territory,” she smiled.

Placing her hand on her stomach she slowly rested against the pillows. Adam placed his hand once again on hers and smiled.

“What?”

Adam smiled and said, “I love you and can’t tell you how excited I am about this child. I’m sorry you’re uncomfortable and I need you to promise me that I’ll know everything … I mean everything!”

Claire’s eyes glowed with appreciation. “See, I told you – you can be hard to live with.”

“Lady it’s too late to do anything about it.”

Laughing Claire said, “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Carefully covering her with a quilt, Claire turned on her side and said, “Ummm. This feels good. I love you Adam.”

He responded, “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

As Claire moved to be more comfortable Adam readjusted the quilt. With her eyes closed she asked. “What are you thinking this very moment?”

Caught off guard, Adam cleared his throat, paused and then continued. “At this very moment, and looking at you, I’m thinking there are no absolutes. If we waited to do everything until we were sure it was right, we’d probably never do much of anything.”

“You’re wise and make life easy. I love you.” Claire drifted off to sleep. Adam watched as she peacefully rested.

*
EIGHT

When they said the words “I Do,” Claire and Adam began the integration of those words into their married life that continued to build into a part of their thoughts, their dreams, their love for one another, their respect and appreciation of each of their gifts … gifts that were given to the other beyond any boundaries. Growing more in their love for one another, every part of their bodies had become full.

The day started out busy. Helping Claire around the house gave Adam a sense of fulfillment but there were some things he wanted to attend to. He left Claire combing Shelley’s hair and announced he was going to the barn. He needed to curry the horses and feed them. He’d return shortly.

Claire knew today she’d be getting a visit from her aunt and uncle. She was excited about that. She also knew Doc Martin would be stopping by to check on her as well. She hoped he could do something about the occasional backaches she was being troubled with but now she was struggling with Shelley as she tried to brush the tangles out of her hair.

Shelley managed to twist and turn which made the task more difficult. Adam had tried over several days to do her hair and the night before had washed it for Claire. What had been a fun time for Adam and Shelley with the water and bubbles was not quite the same for Claire this morning. Claire managed to finish the job but promised Shelley she’d do the hair washing from now on.

The weather had turned warmer. Claire thought it would be nice to get Shelley outdoors. She opened the door and stepped out onto the porch. She called Adam. The look on his face was a curious one as he popped his head out the barn door.

“Do you feel like some company for a little while?” she called.

Relieved that she wasn’t calling for her own needs he responded with a smile, “I’d appreciate some help but company will do.”

Claire released Shelley’s hand and she ran toward the barn with a smile on her face. She reached Adam and he took her hand. Looking back at Claire he gave a half smile as the two of them entered.

Shelley loved jumping in the hay and today was no exception. Adam watched her out of the corner of his eye as he finished currying his horse. Adam made a clicking sound as he poured sweet feed into the trough. Shelley’s eyes widened as she watched him. The next thing he knew Shelley was making the clicking sound as well.

Adam moved over to Claire’s horse to administer the same care. Shelley joined him in the stall.

“How’d you like to give me a hand?” he asked.

“O tay,” Shelley responded.

Adam lifted her onto the back of Topaz and gave her a brush. He showed her how to use it.

“My horse,” Shelley said.

With a smile Adam said, “No. This is mama’s horse but you know what? I think you deserve your own pony. In a few years I’ll teach you how to ride. I think you’ve the makings of a great horsewoman.”

Shelley watched as her papa finished with Topaz and gave her sweet feed. Lifting Shelley down, he placed some sweet feed into his hand and held it up to Topaz. She willingly accepted it. He then placed some in Shelley’s hand and she did likewise. This time together was heartwarming.

Hand in hand they left the barn. The ground was lightly snow covered but it made no difference to the two figures. Claire looked out the window as they strolled into the sun.

They breathed in the air and explored. Walking in front of Shelley, they played a game. Shelley would try to step into the larger footsteps of her father. She laughed until he stopped and she bumped into him.

“Go, go,” she said with a laugh. Her dark eyes were shadowed from the sun by the brim of her bonnet but Adam could see the eagerness of her wanting to continue. The game went on for a while longer until they reached the crest of a small hill.

Kneeling down to Shelley’s level, Adam looked at her bright cheerful face. Life was full. Life would be full for Shelley … he’d see to it. He showed her the wonders of this land. The mountains that stood strong and stately – the guardians – now wearing their winter caps. The water of the snow covered lake – the spring of life. The tall pines that reached toward the heavens standing strong and stately – the heights to which one could reach. The birds that gracefully dotted the sky in majesty – the sign that anything was possible. Adam shared life’s promise and his promise with his daughter.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Doc Martin arrived for Claire’s exam. The pregnancy was progressing well. In a few months they’d have a beautiful healthy baby. As far as her back aches, he suggested she not stand for long periods of time. He also encouraged she get exercise and rest when tired.

The look on Claire’s face showed her concern.

“I know what you’re thinking Claire. I’m a doctor and delivered more babies than I can count. You’re concerned about managing this household and having a bouncing energetic little girl to care for. My suggestion to you is do only what’s necessary and don’t worry about the rest of it.”

Claire’s look was glum. “I know what you’re saying but I can’t just stop. I feel pretty good most of the time and don’t want to be coddled.”

Doc Martin smiled. “I’m not suggesting you stop anything. I’m merely stating you need readjust what you do and how you do it. As far as being coddled, what do you think Adam wants to do?”

Doc Martin had made his point. Before leaving he advised Claire about intimate relations with Adam. Claire turned crimson.

Shelley was given an exam and ensured a clean bill of health as well. Doc Martin was pleased with what seemed adequate adjustment for the child.

While Claire dressed, Adam talked with Doc Martin about what he should expect over the next few months and things he could do. He spoke of Claire’s mood swings and his concerns over Shelley’s not talking.

“Adam, you’re not the first man to become a father. This is a new experience for both you and Claire. As for Shelley, she’s adjusting. Given time this will all be something in the past.”

Adam’s eyes just focused on Doc Martin. “I want to be sure this is an easy time for Claire and that she has no problems.”

Doc Martin rubbed his chin. “From what I can determine, she’s doing well. But you have to understand there will be some discomfort from time to time. That’s to be expected. She’s a strong woman and I don’t think you need worry.”

“I worry about her. Sometimes perhaps too much.”

“If you didn’t I’d be giving you an examination,” Doc Martin chuckled.

Claire joined them as Doc Martin was leaving.

“Claire, with the weather breaking, perhaps I can see you in three weeks for a follow-up exam. Adam it might be nice to bring Claire into town and get her away for the day.”

A gasp was heard and both Adam and Doc Martin turned their heads in unison. “Go into town?” asked Claire. “That’s not heard of. I can’t go into town … pregnant.”

There was an astounding look on two faces. “Well, what I mean,” Claire continued, “In St. Louis a pregnant woman pretty much stays at home during the later months of her pregnancy.”

“Well you and Adam decide if I need come out here.” Doc Martin smiled to himself as he bid them farewell.

Claire’s aunt and uncle arrived just after Shelley was put down for her nap. They were going to stay through supper. Hank was his usual self and started his tall tales which caused laughter. Both he and Maggie were happy to see their niece and to know she was doing well.

Adam had to take care of something and found this to be the time to do it. He’d waited long enough and now Claire wouldn’t be alone. Using the ruse of needing to take some papers over to the Ponderosa, his kissed Claire and indicated he’d be back before they could miss him.

Hank and Maggie asked him to give their regards to Ben and the boys.

The ride to the Ponderosa was a short one and he intended to take it alone. As he rode through the tall standing pines and headed toward the granite mountains, he had company … emotions and a hidden fear. He remembered the face in the photo of his mother and felt his heart speed up. He wondered how such a wonderful joy could be replaced with a worry such as he carried … and especially now since Doc Martin ensured that everything was fine. Fear. Guilt. They were his companions and he had to get rid of them.

He pulled up at the Ponderosa and slid with ease from the saddle. Adam took a deep breath and walked into the house. “Anyone here?” he called out as he placed his hat on the credenza and took off his coat.

Rushing from the kitchen, Hop Sing said, “Mista Adam, good to see you. You no bring little one and Missy Claire?”

“Ah no Hop Sing. Not this time, I was wondering if Pa was here.”

“Yes,” he here. “In barn. I go get.”

“No need. I can get him. By the way, where are Hoss and Joe?”

There was a smattering of Chinese and then English followed. “Brothers are out getting some wood. They make mess in house all time lately. I not clean up anymore!”

Adam felt right at home. Some things didn’t change. He grinned.

The door opened and Ben walked in. “Adam! Saw your horse what brings you over here?” asked Ben.

He noticed the look of nonchalance showing on the face of his oldest son. Something was up and he decided to let it unfold in Adam’s time.

“How about some coffee. Like to talk to you about some of the stock we’re going to buy come spring,” Ben said as he headed to the kitchen.

Adam looked around the great room and remembered the conversations he’d had so often with his father. Like a magnet he was drawn to the hearth and stared at the flames.

“Here we are,” said Ben as he carried two cups of coffee. He stopped when he saw Adam looking into the flames. He walked over and Adam turned. Accepting the cup from his father, he sat on the table as he’d done so many times.

A moment passed and Ben sat in his chair. Yes, some things never changed.

“I’m sure you came here for a reason son. Want to tell me what it is?”

Adam sipped his coffee and then put the cup down. He looked at his father and felt like a little boy again.

“Pa, first let me say that Shelley and Claire are fine. Doc Martin saw both of them today.” Adam paused.

Ben sipped his coffee and looked directly at Adam. He waited.

Adam looked at his wedding band and decided to jump in. He looked at Ben and said, “I can’t imagine my life without Claire.”

Ben was surprised at Adam’s statement. He put his cup on the table. “Where’s this coming from? None of us can imagine our lives without Claire.”

Looking directly at his father, he spoke in quiet measured tones. “I feel happier than I can ever have imagined. Claire is my soul. Shelley is … is beautiful. I love them more that I can say.”

Ben grinned. “Try telling me something I don’t already know.”

Seeing the look on Adam’s face his expression changed.

“Pa I’m trying to be sensitive. It’s my mother.”

“Elizabeth?” Ben asked. “What about your mother?”

“You’ve told me so much about her it’s as if I really knew her. I know the pain you felt when she … she was no longer here.” Adam swallowed and took a deep breath.

Ben realized something was deeply bothering his son. “Yes, it was a difficult time but she’s been with me all these years.”

Adam was caught off guard by his father’s comments. Ben realized Adam didn’t understand.

“She remains in my memories, my heart and she lives in you.”

“I’ve talked to Claire about the guilt I’ve carried all these years.”

“Guilt?” asked Ben. “What guilt?”

“It was my birth that caused her death,” Adam said quietly.

Ben, in his wisdom now understood.

“Son, you didn’t cause the death of your mother. That’s something you have to know and believe. How could you keep this inside you all of these years?”

Ben wondered about the way his son handled situations and was beginning to realize there were a number of things that may have affected him. He was now, for the first time, hearing one of them.

“I’m concerned for Claire. The baby is due in a few months now and I’m ….”

Ben didn’t allow Adam to finish. “You’re worried that you might lose Claire to childbirth.”

“I know it’s foolish to think that way, but it keeps creeping into my mind lately. I just needed to talk about it and I’m sure you understand my not sharing this with Claire.”

Ben felt a tightening in his stomach for his firstborn. He reached over and touched Adam’s arm. “Son your worry isn’t warranted. Elizabeth … err … your mother was precious to me. Her death came as a shock of course, but she didn’t leave us because of you. The Almighty’s plan is not ours. What happens in life can be painful and a shock – but there is always a reason. We can’t be fearful of the future – we are to live it to the fullest – no matter how hard. There are rewards.”

Adam read the sincerity in his father’s face and wanted to believe what he was being told. Somehow he still found it hard.

“Let me tell you what I came to realize and it’s carried me through hard times,” Ben said tenderly. He looked directly into his son’s eyes.

“People who have lost relationships often wonder why they can’t just let it be ‘water under the bridge’. It is water under the bridge – the trouble is we don’t live on the bridge but in the river of life with its many twists and turns.”

Adam’s somber look was softening. How he appreciated the man that sat before him. “Thanks pa,” was all Adam seemed to be able to muster.

“Now I don’t know if this baby will be a boy or a girl. What I do know is that I have a wonderful granddaughter that I love with all my heart. I’ve seen in you something like a line of gold thread running through your words when you talk to your daughter, and gradually over the years it will get to be long enough for you to pick up in your hands and weave into a cloth that feels like love itself.”

“How did you get so wise?” Adam smiled. “Thanks for listening to me and allowing me to share my fear.”

“Are you going to be alright?” asked Ben.

“I couldn’t be better pa.”

NINE

The next few weeks seemed to fly by. Numerous visits were made to Adam and Claire’s home by family. All seemed to be flourishing – perhaps Claire more than most.

Concerns over what could not be controlled were cast aside like worn out boots while the joy of life and family filled every aspect of the Ponderosa and beyond. Beyond because Ben, Hoss, Joe, Uncle Hank, Aunt Maggie and other close friends of Adam and Claire were sharing their excitement over the child to be born, not to mention the child who had already stolen the hearts of so many.

Claire’s mood was much improved as she went about her daily activities. It appeared that even Shelley had a child’s awareness that something grand was about to happen and she was going to be part of it. In her way, she was helping on a small scale.

Adam spent quite a lot of time with both Claire and Shelley but knew with the weather having broken, he needed to be working hard to meet the deadline. With the builders he worked so feverishly with prior to the winter, he believed he could complete the house for his family before the baby’s birth, baring any unforeseen mishaps. It was time to get them to work.

Joe dropped by unannounced as usual but was always welcomed warmly by Claire with a joke and Shelley calling, “Unca Joe.” All of this was to his delight.

Today he was on a mission. He noticed Claire’s progress toward making him and Hoss uncles for the second time. As he bounced Shelley around, he looked at his brother and felt a sense of deep attachment to him and happiness for his life. He’d do whatever he could to see it continued.

“Claire can I get a cup of coffee?” asked Joe. “Pa and I have some plans I’d like to talk to you and Adam about.”

Adam eyed Joe knowing this tone of voice and wondered what was coming. Certainly Joe was not about to ask Claire to perform for the Arts Society again.

Coffee was poured for all with a glass of milk for Shelley and her teddy bear.

“So Joe, what are the plans?” Claire asked as Adam pulled a chair out for her.

“Well Hoss’s birthday is two weeks away. Every year he expects to have a family party and always knows the day.”

Adams eyes seemed to follow the tilt of his head as he listened to his brother.

“Now don’t look at me that way Adam, you haven’t heard what pa and I came up with,” Joe added.

“Are you sure this is something you AND pa came up with?”

“We’d like to surprise Hoss for a change. It’s something he’d never expect and we think big brother would really be surprised.”

“So you’re planning to give Hoss a surprise party.”

“Adam you’re just too smart for me. It must be all that book learning you had,” Joe teased.

Claire laughed and caught Joe’s eye. “Now Joe I think that sounds like a great idea. I’m just wondering what you’re going to try to coerce me into this time,” Claire smiled. After all, she and Joe had gone through several loving rounds of disagreements, stubborn opinions and his embarrassing antics.

“I’m not trying to coerce you into anything,” Joe defended. “We just thought we’d like to give something special to Hoss and wanted to include all of you.”

Adam stifled a smirk. He knew there was more that had been left unspoken. “Joe, there’s nothing like a celebration and our family will be there. Now when and where is the party?” Adam queried.

Joe seemed to have lost his voice. Adam and Claire looked at one another with raised eyebrows. Shelley continued to bounce her teddy bear.

“Well that’s just it,” Joe added sheepishly. “We’re planning to have it at the Ponderosa of course … and … “

Adam said nothing. He nonchalantly rose and poured more coffee. Here it comes he thought. Claire kept her sharp eyes on Joe.

“Your were saying Joe ….” Adam said as he sat down.

Joe rose and picked Shelley up in his arms. It was almost as if he were using her as his shield.

“Unca Joe. Unca Joe. Ride pease. Horse pease,” said Shelley.

Adam waited while his piercing eyes penetrated Joe’s armor.

“OK here’s the deal. The party will take place at the Ponderosa and well … well … we … I thought if you haven’t gotten a gift for Hoss that maybe Claire could help out,” Joe said nervously as he looked at Claire.

The only voice to be heard was Joe’s. “Well you know how often Hoss has said he’d like a picture of Chubb.”

“Yes,” said Adam in a sing song tone.

“Well I thought Claire could maybe paint Chubb.”

“You want me to go over to the Ponderosa in my condition, pick up a bucket and brush and cover Chubb with a coat of paint?” asked Claire.

“That would certainly be a surprise for Hoss’s birthday,” added Adam dryly.

“You two are not going to make this easy for me are you?” asked Joe.

“Are we making this hard for you?” Claire asked. She looked at Adam and knew he was leaving the decision to her.

With a sigh Claire said, “Joe I’ll do it but you have to do something for me.”

“Anything, you just name it and I’m at your beck and call,” Joe said with excitement.

“Fine then. I could use some help around here and Adam has a lot to take care of although he doesn’t think I know what’s running through his mind.”

Her comment caught Adam’s immediate attention.

“I’m ready, willing and able,” Joe said with great authority.

“Fine then. In order to paint, I need someone to look after Shelley, and help with the housework. I think it’s called a ‘Nanny.’ Yes, I’m sure of it. You’ll become Shelley’s nanny until the painting is finished.”

The look on Joe’s face was shock. He looked at Shelley who was poking him with her finger and swallowed. “Ah Nanny … sure I’ll be …. Shelley’s …. Nanny.”

“Fine. Now when do you need the painting?” asked Claire.

“The party will be on Saturday this week. Just thought we’d announce it as a family gathering.”

“This Saturday? Joe that’s only five days away! I’m not a miracle worker!” exclaimed Claire.

Joe was speechless and hung his head.

“Fives days away calls for you to be more than a nanny – and from my calculations that starts this very instant.”

Adam smiled hearing Claire’s words. He looked at Joe with a confident smile. When would his brother learn? He loved this woman who was more than a match for Joe. How he loved her.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Tradition was cast to the wind. Claire finished her visit with her aunt and uncle. She was waiting for Adam to pick her up and Joe would arrive to collect Shelley.

Regardless of her advancing pregnancy and her thoughts, today she was going into Virginia City with Adam to order some supplies and see Doc Martin. Secretly her aunt knew she was insecure about this trip but kept it to herself.

Adam arrived on time but was not alone. Hoss had joined him. He had to take care of some Ponderosa business for Ben and decided he’d ride along with them.

Adam and Claire explained once again to Shelley that Uncle Joe was coming to get her and take her home.

“She’s going to be fine,” Adam whispered into Claire’s ear. “Your aunt knows how to handle Shelley if there’s a problem. There’s nothing to worry about.” He wished he believed what he was saying.

The trip to town was accompanied by the cadence of the horse’s hooves. Hoss sang a song off key to that cadence. When he wasn’t singing he was whistling.

“Hoss you seem particularly perky today,” said Claire.

“Yes’m. Springs coming and I can just smell it in the air. Always feel perky this time of the year.”

“I thought it had something to do with you having a birthday in a few weeks,” added Adam.

“Adam, for as smart as you are you just can’t get dates right. I hope you at least remember the date the baby is born.”

Adam and Claire smiled and breathed in the fragrance of the pines that gently ushered them closer to Virginia City.

“Now why wouldn’t I remember the baby’s birthday brother?”

“Because you can’t remember mine,” exclaimed Hoss. “Dadburnit, my birthday is next week.”

“Sorry Hoss,” was all Adam said.

“Claire you have my sympathy,” added Hoss.

“Thank you but I think Joe’s the one that needs sympathy.”

* * * * * * * * * *

Upon arriving at Doc Martin’s office Hoss pushed his hat back on his head. Leaning on the horn of his saddle, he knew the reason for the visit.

“Everything OK Claire? I mean it won’t be much longer and … uh … if there’s something you need, just let me know. Never mind you don’t have to let me know. I’ll just stop by.”

“Hoss thank you but I think as things are developing it might be wiser if I let you know what I need and when,” Claire said graciously.

He smiled and his cheeks turned rosy.

“There’s one thing you can do,” added Claire.

“You just name it.”

“Well Adam and I have an appointment with Doctor Martin and we also have supplies we need. Would you be kind enough to drop this list off at the General Store so they can start filling it?”

“Be my pleasure,” Hoss said as he reached down and took the list from Claire. He headed on about his business.

Adam assisted Claire gently down from the carriage. “It seems Mrs. Cartwright that you have all the Cartwright men working for you.”

All Claire said was “Ummmm,” as they entered Doc Martin’s office.

They had to wait longer than expected for Claire’s examination. When Doc Martin was able to see Claire, he was thorough.

“Everything is progressing fine Claire. Are you getting exercise and taking the tea Hop Sing prepared for you along with the tonic I’ve given you?”

“Yes sir,” Claire said as she gave him a salute.

He laughed. “How is the papa-to-be managing?”

“I think he’d probably be more honest with you than with me. I’d day he’s getting more nervous everyday. There’s hardly anything I can do without him keeping an eye on me or making me sit down.”

“Good. I’m glad he’s arranged for Lili Pickett to help out from now until just after the baby is born. She’s done this for other mothers and is just marvelous. You’re very lucky.”

The look on Claire’s face spoke volumes even though she’d said nothing. Doc Martin realized he’d let the cat out of the bag. He thought Adam had talked to Claire about this.

Maintaining her composure, Claire thanked Doc Martin for the clean bill of health and the extra tonic.

Entering the waiting area, Adam could see a changed expression on Claire’s face.

“Well what’s the verdict Doc?” asked Adam as his eyes caught sight of the look once again on Claire’s face.

“She’s perfect as far as I can see. She’ll probably get tired of waiting from here on out, and as I’ve told her, she needs to watch what she eats. The last months of pregnancy a woman tends to put on more weight.”

At this moment Adam wasn’t concerned about the weight Claire would be gaining. He was worrying about the weight he felt from the look on Claire’s face.

Outside Doc Martin’s office Adam offered his arm to assist Claire down the steps. She ignored his gesture and he just rolled his eyes.

Claire stopped at the carriage and turned to Adam.

“Adam Cartwright! Of all the nerve! Why didn’t you tell me you’d engaged Lili Pickett to baby-sit me?”

“I was planning to have a conversation with you about it but I guess it slipped my mind for the moment.”

“Slipped your mind my foot,” Claire said as she lowered her voice and nodded at the passersby.

“Alright. I only wanted to ensure that you had the necessary help I felt you could use during this time. I was going to have a conversation with you about it when the time was right. You’ve criticized me for coddling you and watching your every move. You can’t blame me for wanting things to be easier for you. Call it coddling if you want,” Adam said lowering his voice and tipping his hat to passersby. “I call it loving you and wanting this to be an easy time for you. We would have had this conversation and it wouldn’t be taking place on a public street.”

Claire knew Adam was doing it because he loved her but she had to say what was on her mind. He had ‘that’ look on his face and she knew what it meant.

“Adam, I want you to listen to me. We talked about some of the most intimate and innermost things. For me there is no such thing as an appropriate time or a worthless conversation provided you know what to listen for … and know this Adam … questions are the breath of life for a conversation. Now, will you please help me into the carriage?”

Adam was now joining the Cartwright men in doing Claire’s bidding. He kissed her cheek lightly and her warmth returned.

“Sometimes you’re hard to live with Adam.”

“I know, but you do have a way of setting me straight and I love it.”

Ben thought it amusing Joe had a new responsibility. He was also annoyed that his youngest son had not used common sense. To ask Claire to paint a portrait of Chubb on such short notice was more than inconsiderate he’d barked at Joe.

In hindsight Joe realized that his father was right. Once again his excitement had taken over his clear thinking. Well, it was done now and he was paying a price higher than he anticipated.

Shelley was more than active and had a way of twisting Joe around her little finger. She kept him busy and tried to be the authority figure. After an afternoon of fussing about taking a nap, Claire had to intercede. The only comment Joe could make at the time was, “This isn’t as easy as I thought it would be.”

Claire just offered a warm smile and left the two of them together. Adam had ridden out to take a look at the house … the house that he was anxious to complete before the arrival of the baby. He knew he’d have to work long and hard to meet his deadline. Regardless of how Claire had felt, the assistance of Lili Pickett was what they both needed.

Today Hoss headed into Virginia City with the wagon to pick up supplies. He’d be away for the better part of the day. Joe snuck Chubb out of the barn and trotted him over to Claire.

Claire picked up her drawing materials, wrapped herself in warm clothing and ventured out. Joe was in charge once again.

Claire walked around the solid, stately animal. She smiled to herself. She could understand the rider and this horse – both strong in build, both driven by intuition and feeling, both earnest in their pursuits, and both gentle as a summer’s breeze when need be. This was a perfect match of man and animal. The portrait would be completed. She could feel the image needing to be captured.

Joe had provided a seat for her to sit on while she sketched. The air was refreshing and it seemed as if Chubb understood the importance of cooperating. After all, Joe had to return Chubb to the Ponderosa before Hoss returned from town.

It seemed all was going well when the door opened.

“Ahh … Claire,” said Joe. “Could you come in for a minute?”

“Is something wrong Joe?”

“Well not really … Shelley just had a little mishap.”

Claire eased herself up and entered the house. She found Shelley sitting on the floor banging on some small pots. She also found her wet.

“Ah … she seems to have wet herself,” Joe said embarrassed.

Claire just shot a look at Joe and asked, “Didn’t she tell you she had to relieve herself.”

“No,” added Joe. “She just wanted to play with the pots.”

Claire smiled, as Shelley said, “Potty, potty, potty,” and continued to bang out sounds with Claire’s cooking spoons.

Placing her hands on her well rounded hips, Claire said, “When Shelley says potty, it means she has to relieve herself, not play with my cooking pots.”

Joe ran his fingers through his hair and muttered, “I guess I didn’t understand what she meant.”

“That’s obvious,” Claire smiled. “Now I’ll put some fresh clothes out for Shelley and you can change her. After that you can clean up the kitchen while I finish my sketch. We don’t have a lot of time.” With that Claire left the kitchen with Joe wondering what he’d gotten himself into.

* * * * * * * * * *

Adam dismounted and removed his gloves. The winter months had not changed the beauty of what he saw before him. He saw the life that would occupy this place. His eyes focused with the intensity of an eagle viewing its prey. His concentration was on his home … their home … the place that would be called home.

For a moment he wondered what was going on between Joe and Shelley. He smiled and just shook his head as he entered through what would become the front door. Claire would make sure that all was in order – Joe would make sure that his family was fine. No need to worry.

The careful inspection pointed the way for Adam. Pulling out a small pad and pencil, he sat in what would the dining room and made notes. His instincts seemed to be on point. The home would be finished without any more hesitation. His sensitivity and pride welled within him. He’d never imagined the fullness he would feel at this stage of his life. I’m a proud man he thought. I can admit that openly to myself now. This home will be finished with love beyond one’s comprehension. Benjamin Cartwright did one fine job.

He took one last gaze at the future, mounted his horse and rode away with the knowledge that success and happiness are not measured by the position one has reached in life as much as the obstacles overcome while trying to succeed. He and his entire family wore the badges of happiness and success.
* * * * * * * * * *

Claire finished her sketch of Chubb. Joe appeared somewhat relieved with her announcement.

“Great! Is there anything else you need? I have to get this piece of horseflesh back before Hoss returns from town.”

“No I can’t think of anything else for the moment. I just need to mix some paints and pull out a fresh canvas.”

“So you think it will be ready by Saturday? This isn’t too much for you is it?”

“Joe, I’ll tell you this,” Claire paused seeing the anxiety in Joe’s face. “I don’t think it’s a time to ask if it’s too much for me. I’ll make sure it’s ready. That’s a promise but I can’t guarantee how good it will be.”

Joe grabbed Claire by her shoulders and quickly planted a sound kiss upon her cheek. He smiled. “I’m sure it’ll be perfect – just like you. Thanks sis.”

Claire loved the way Joe showed his excitement and calling her sis. She was happy.

“Now I need to get Chubb back to the Ponderosa,” he said as he started to get his coat and hat. “Hoss is really going to be surprised!”

“Ahh Joe. Aren’t you forgetting something?” smiled Claire.

He turned with a confused look on his face. Claire looked at him.

“You don’t mean …..”

Claire shook her head yes. “You’re on duty and I think Shelley could use some fresh air. Her hat and coat are hanging in the hallway. I have some work to do and this is part of the bargain.”

Joe was not about to say anything. He’d put himself in this position and would honor it – besides, what could be better than Shelley being watched by two people instead of one? His pa would welcome the visit and give him a well needed break. He smiled and put her hat and coat on. One day I’ll learn.

ELEVEN

Birthdays were a time of reflection for Ben Cartwright. Each birthday his sons had always conjured up past memories. He recalled earlier years when the memories cut through him with painful thoughts of what might have been. He moved on having carefully placed the mothers of his sons safely into a special place in his heart. He now held the memories of each son’s growth and development within the scope of his sight … always being thankful for the diversity they each had. This diversity was the strength of his family.

Surprises were hardly ever kept when it was time for a birthday. The traditional family dinner and cake was expected unless it was a milestone birthday. Celebrations generally consisted of immediate family and gifts.

He grinned at the impetuousness of Joe. A surprise party for Hoss was a loving gesture and the idea of doing it a week early was certain to catch Hoss off guard. To make it extra special, it would include his daughter-in-law and granddaughter. He smiled as he thought of the evening and found that his steps had become lighter.

Walking across the great room, he heard the sound of singing, and upon opening the door saw Joe with Shelley sitting in front of him with Chubb being led carefully home.

“Well,” Ben said as he walked outside. “How’s my favorite granddaughter?”

Ben lifted her down and hugged her to him. He kissed her on both cheeks and promptly turned on his heel and carried her into the house. Before Joe could say anything Ben had closed the door.

“Hop Sing,” called Ben as he put Shelley down and started to remove her coat and hat. “We have a special visitor!”

“I’m so glad that you’re here,” Ben said anxiously. “We’re going to have time to spend together and it’s going to be fun.”

Hop Sing came out of the kitchen wiping his hands. Upon seeing Shelley he smiled brightly and walked over to her. “Welcome little one. Hop Sing most pleased to see you. Think of you often. Will make something special for you.”

Looking at Ben, he asked, “Where are Mista Adam and Missy Claire?”

At that moment the door opened and Joe tossed his hat onto the credenza and took off his coat. He promptly plopped himself on the settee and let out a long tired sigh.

Shelley ran over to Joe and promptly positioned herself in his lap. “Wanna play Unca Joe.” Joe threw his head back and said, “Paaaaaaaaa!”

Ben grinned. To answer your question Hop Sing, “You’re looking at Shelley’s nanny for the week. Joseph Cartwright here has volunteered his services since he’s asked Claire to complete a project for Hoss’s surprise party. In order for Claire to complete it, Joe is watching Shelley and taking care of the household chores at Adam’s.”

“You joke Mista Ben.”

“No I’m not joking. That’s the deal he made.”

Hop Sing’s face took on a serious look. “Mista Adam smart man. I think he make BIG mistake leaving care of little one to Mista Joe.”

“Let’s now be so harsh on Joe.”

“I not be harsh. I tell truth.” Hop Sing laughed, gave a wave to Shelley and headed back to the kitchen.

Ben had one of the most wonderful afternoons he could remember and wouldn’t have traded it for anything.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Adam pulled the carriage around and returned to the house. He’d carefully placed the family present wrapped in a comforter into the carriage. He returned to finish getting dressed, collect his family and head to the Ponderosa.

“Do you think Hoss expects anything?” quizzed Claire.

“Ummmm it’s hard to say. I don’t think so unless something happened at the Ponderosa to give it away,” added Adam as he reached for his tie.

Shelley bounced into their bedroom and sat down watching as her father tied his tie. Claire looked over at her and smiled. She looked perfect in her pink dress with matching sash and white lace collar. Her dark hair was brushed off her face and complimented with pink ribbon. Thank goodness Adam had given up on washing hair thought Claire.

Shelley walked in front of Adam and rested her chin on her arm as she watched nimble fingers tie and untie until the tie was the way Adam wanted it. What amused him was the intensity with which he caught her watching his every move.

“Well how do I look?”

“Handsome,” said Shelley.

Adam was surprised hearing the word. He looked at Claire who was smiling and turned away.

“So I look handsome? Thank you,” he said as he took her hands.

“Where did you learn the word handsome?”

“Mama said it to me.”

Adam just wondered exactly what Claire had said to their daughter. He reached for his jacket.

Adam assisted his family down the stairs. He was once again a proud man. His family was beautiful to look at and he was a part of it. Next stop was the Ponderosa and the party.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Ben and Joe had done all they could to contain the surprise. What they were concerned about was Hoss sneaking into the kitchen and seeing the birthday cake.

Hop Sing warned the kitchen was off limits until dinner was served. When Hoss heard the words he realized it was not a warning but rather a threat.

Coming down the stairs Hoss said, “I think this is a great idea to have Adam and his family over for dinner.”

“Yeah, pa and I thought it would be nice since it’s getting harder for Claire to get around. Besides, this may be the last time before the baby is born.”

Hoss just smiled and grabbed an apple. “Just a couple of months to go. This is a long wait for me.”

Ben stopped what he was doing and looked at his middle son. “A long wait for you? Have you forgotten what Claire is going through?”

“Yeah Hoss,” added Joe. “And … and what Adam is going through?”

“I just meant that I can’t wait for the baby to get here. She’s gonna probably have Claire’s looks and talent and get stuck with Adam’s brain,” Hoss muttered.

“Hold it Hoss. Who say’s it’s going to be a girl. Our history has been a family of males. This baby is going to be a boy!”

Ben rolled his eyes. Somewhere in the recesses of his mind he recalled this conversation having taken place before.

The carriage pulled up but neither Joe nor Hoss heard it because they were throwing the words ‘boy’ and ‘girl’ back and forth at each other. Ben put a stop to their non discussion as Hop Sing made his way to the door to let the Adam Cartwright family in.

Pleasantries were exchanged and Ben relished watching his family seated around the great room. His heart was full and Shelley made a point of extending greetings to all of them. Claire had done her homework with the help of Joe. Adam wondered where he’d been to miss this etiquette training. He could see the change taking place in Shelley.

The evening was filled with good food, tall tales, laughter and comfort. Jokes were made about how Adam would react when it was time for the baby to be born. He took it in stride. There was no reason to ask Claire how things were progressing because it was very obvious.

They finished a spectacular dinner that included Hop Sing’s special mini meal for Shelley.

They sat around the great room, Adam played the guitar and they all sang. It still appeared that Hoss was unaware of the real reason for this gathering. He was thoroughly enjoying the evening. Hop Sing peeked from the kitchen waiting for a sign from Ben.

Just as Adam was about to start another song, Shelley walked over to Joe and said, “Potty!”

Joe’s eyebrows raised and Claire broke out into hysterical laughter. She remembered the last time Joe heard those words. With a little difficulty she rose from the settee and offered to take care of the matter. Joe breathed a sigh of relief.

Adam excused himself and stated he wanted to remind Hop Sing about needing more tea for Claire. What he actually did was to exit through the kitchen door to retrieve the gift from the carriage.

He returned quickly and picked up his guitar again and started singing. Within minutes Shelley bounced into the room and sat at her father’s feet. Ben assisted Claire into a more comfortable chair rather than on the settee.

Again they all joined in song and Shelley started singing loudly and off key.

Ben clapped his hands together and said, “That was more fun than I’ve had in a while. Now I think it is time for a surprise.”

Adam kept a bland look on his face as he sat the guitar aside. Claire called for Shelley to come and sit with Adam. Joe just grinned. Hoss wondered what was going on.

Hoss didn’t have to wait very long. Hop Sing entered carrying a cake fully lit with candles. The family broke out into singing “Happy Birthday” to Hoss. Shelley’s eyes lit up almost as brightly as the candles.

For once Hoss was truly surprised and almost speechless. When they’d finished singing, Joe said, “Speech! Speech!”

“Joe,” Adam said quietly. “I think it might be wise to let Hoss make a wish and blow out the candles first.”

Hoss was grinning from ear to ear. He walked over to the table and then said, “Little Bits why don’t you come on over here and help me?”

Shelley was front and center. Hoss closed his eyes. Shelley closed her eyes. His wish made, he leaned over with Shelley and on the count of three they blew out the candles.

Round of cheers abounded and Ben slapped Hoss on his back.

Grinning Hoss said, “I know I didn’t make a mistake – at least I don’t think so – but if my calculations are right my birthday isn’t until next Saturday.”

“You’re right,” Joe chimed in. “We can never surprise you so we decided to celebrate a week early.”

“This is just plum too much,” Hoss added.

“Well son, you need to cut the cake,” Ben urged.

Smiles abounded on the faces of the family. Claire’s eyes drifted toward Adam. As if being drawn by a magnet, Adam’s eyes focused on her. They were happy. Adam silently slipped into the kitchen and returned.

Hoss cut the first slice of cake. Hop Sing joined them and started cutting the rest. His homemade ice cream was a special treat and the feast started again and included him.

Ben lifted his glass to Hoss and said, “If there’s something that you’re dreaming of then may it all come true, because you deserve it all … Happy Birthday son!”

Hoss was more than surprised and happy. He was being shown how much he was loved and was moved by it.

After a bit of teasing and several helpings of cake and ice cream, Adam cleared his voice and said, “I think it’s time to carry this festive occasion further.”

Hoss looked puzzled. Adam handed the gift to Joe.

“Happy birthday Hoss,” said Joe as he handed Hoss the gift. “Just something to show how much we appreciate and care for you.”

Hoss looked around and then back at the large package. He was being overcome by emotion. The family understood. They loved him all the more.

“Open it pease,” pleaded Shelley.

Hoss looked at her and said, “OK Little Bits. You come over here and help me.”

Hoss and Shelley tore the wrapping paper away from the gift not caring where the paper fell. Carefully removing the protective wrapping Claire had placed over it, Hoss carefully removed it. He was speechless as he looked at the portrait in his hands.

Shelley clapped her hands.

The family watched Hoss’s expression as he looked at the painting.

“Well?” said Joe. “What do you think?”

Claire put her head down and held it with her hand.

Adam leaned down and asked if she was OK.

“Adam, I wish I could crawl into a hole.”

He didn’t understand.

“I want to thank you for this … this … gift,” Hoss said trying to be gracious.

“Is that all you have to say?” asked Joe.

Hoss looked up and forced a smile. “I’m sure I can find something to say, but right now I have to think about it.”

Joe could not stand it any longer and grabbed the portrait from Hoss’s hands and said, “What do you mean you have to think ……” He stopped.

Quietly Claire said, “Oh Adam.”

Joe’s eyes immediately looked at Claire. Ben’s grin was beginning to wane.

“Well let us see it,” urged Ben.

“It’s right fine,” said Hoss. “I want to thank you all.”

Again Ben said, “Let’s see it.”

Joe looked at Hoss and then turned the painting around. It was a painting of a brightly colored clown.

Adam’s eyes changed. Ben’s mouth closed. Claire’s head dropped even lower. Hop Sing cut another piece of cake.

“Hoss this isn’t exactly what we had planned to give you,” Joe said slowly. “I’m not sure what happened.”

“This is a right fine gift and I want to thank all of you for the party and for remembering me,” Hoss said caringly.

Adam’s eyes were on Claire. He wondered what had gotten into her.

Taking a deep breath Claire said, “Joe, if you carefully remove the top canvass by pulling the little strip in the corner, you’ll be able to present Hoss with our real gift.”

Joe obliged. As he did, the rich colors of the Nevada landscape started to be revealed. In the center was a beautifully painted portrait of Chubb.

Hoss’s eyes misted as he looked at it. He now truly could not find words to say thank you.

Ben and Joe had spared no cost in ensuring that the proper frame was obtained to compliment it.

Adam watched as Joe disappeared and returned. Dropping the gift in front of Hoss, Ben, Adam and Joe presented Hoss with a new saddle for Chubb that had his initials carefully tooled into it.

This was truly a family event.

“Hoss I’m sorry about the initial surprise,” said Claire. “Perhaps it wasn’t as humorous as I intended. The painting of the clown is actually for Joe. He’s done such a wonderful job this week taking care of Shelley, I thought I’d include something for him as well.”

The family broke into hysterics and non stop laughter. Hoss graciously thanked all of them and after kissing Claire and hugging her, he turned to them all and said, “This will certainly be a birthday that I’ll never forget. I can’t tell you how special it is.”

Bending down to give Claire a kiss, he said, “There are no words to say thank you.”

Claire touched his face and saw the gentleness in his eyes. “Hoss you don’t need words. We did it because we love you.”

As Hoss suggested a last round of ice cream for everyone, Adam leaned down and said to Claire, “We’re going to have to talk about this.”

Smiling Claire said, “I thought we might.”

Ben was happy and laughed every time he thought of the joke Claire had played on Joe.

Before they left for the evening, Ben had a few last words to say to his family. “Sincere family feelings are core heart feelings. They are the basis for true family values. While we have differences, we remain “family” by virtue of our heart connection. I love all of you and wish Hoss a very special birthday.”

TWELVE

The days and weeks moved along and welcomed spring. The sky was bright and the sounds of spring echoed everywhere. Birds sang joyously, the streams and lakes had shed their coverings of snow and reflected the radiance of the sun, the pines stretched and seemed to yawn as they awakened from their winter solitude, the earth was greening beneath the staunch mountains, fields of wild flowers were coming to life, the dogwood trees were beginning to show their delicate flowers as if saying ‘Amen’ at the end of a prayer. Spring in Nevada and on the Ponderosa was more than life awakening – it was invigorating and life giving.

Life was on the horizon for Claire in her pregnancy. Shelley seemed to understand her life and had almost totally integrated herself into her family. She stayed close by her mother as if knowing she was needed.

Adam and Claire spent many hours showing Shelley what words could not say. Their actions and words she accepted almost intuitively. She was listening more, speaking more, and smiling more. She loved her parents and even when corrected had learned to understand right from wrong. What pleased Adam and Claire most was Shelley’s constant chattering even if the words weren’t quite right.

Evenings were spent with the nightly ritual of bedtime stories. Adam would hold Shelley on his lap and stroke her hair as she listened wide-eyed. Prayers followed and the little person who had changed their lives would rest as if the world contained no pain, no anguish, but just security and love.

One particular night Claire kissed Shelley goodnight but remained in the rocking chair. Her trek up the stairs this night would be only to go to bed. Her back and legs were aching. Adam, with the help of Shelley, had placed Claire’s feet up on a footstool for comfort.

As Shelley settled under the covers, Adam decided not to read a story but tell one. The bright eyes waited patiently and a smile spread across the tiny lips.

“Once upon a time ….” Adam started.

The story was of a little boy who was loved beyond understanding. A little boy that grew up to find joy and happiness in the heart of a special little person. This special person was just that because of the heart that gave love – because of her beauty – because of her laughter – because of her knowing she was loved and cared about.

Adam could see Shelley was listening with her whole being. He continued to tell her of all the wonderful gifts this special person gave without knowing. He folded into the story family, grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Before her eyelids began to become heavy with the onset of sleep, he spoke of a new life that was growing and would be arriving soon. This new life would be another special person that would be loved and cared for as much as she was.

At this point Shelley giggled and said, “Mama has a baby for me.”

Adam laughed and stroked her hair. “Mama is going to have a baby for all of us.”

“I know you felt the baby move because mama let you. It can be hard to just feel something and not be able to see it,” he said as he tickled her tummy.

She laughed and moved at his touch.

“See?” said Adam. “I tickled you and you felt it, but you couldn’t see the inside part of you being tickled.”

“That OK. Lots of fun,” Shelley said as she embraced a well worn teddy bear.

Adam finished the story by saying a miracle was about to happen to all the special people in the family. A new little baby was coming soon and for the little boy who had grown up to become a papa with a special little person, there was now going to be another special person. His life was wonderful and the special little person holding a teddy bear would always be loved and cared for by her mama and papa. She would help with the new baby and make life wonderful for all of them.

“Do you know who the special person is that does such wonderful things?”

Sheepishly she said, “Me. Shelley,” and giggled.

“You’re absolutely right. I love you Shelley and we have many things to do. You need to sleep now so that our dreams will come true.”

He kissed her as her eyes drooped and closed. It was just a few minutes before she’d fallen away into dreamland.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Lili Pickett was a blessing for Claire. She arrived each day with a song on her lips and joy in her heart. Whatever Claire needed, she’d learned to ask for. Mrs. Pickett was blessed with a genuine kindness and ability to ease Claire’s feelings about others helping with the house and her needs.

A bond quickly grew between them. What Mrs. Pickett enjoyed most was Claire playing the piano. There was no need for Adam to pay her. Claire’s music was a lift to her spirit and soul and would have been enough.

Adam had been leaving just after breakfast and returning just before dinner. He’d been working furiously on the house and it was just about completed. Claire worried about his tiredness and tried to encourage him to take time to rest. He’d just shrug it off but always made it a point to have time with Shelley before she went to bed and talk with Claire about her day and how she was feeling.

Claire understood the drive in Adam and relished their moments together. Often just before turning out the lamp in their bedroom, Claire would massage Adam’s back and shoulders to ease his muscles. He loved the feel of her hands and on more than one occasion had to control his manly desires. Claire understood. They found a way to fulfill each other. Sleep always came quickly.

Tonight Adam pulled Claire to him as they sat in front of the fireplace. Time past was a memory he’d remember. Within the next several weeks there’d be a new life.

Reaching into his pocket he handed Claire the letter.

“What’s this?” asked Claire.

“I do believe it’s called a letter. I think you should read it.”

Claire opened it and read it thoroughly. Her eyes filled with tears. She put the letter down and openly let the tears flow.

“Just what I expected,” he said. “I learned about you a long time ago. Tears come when you’re happy.”

“Tomorrow we’re all going to take a ride. I think it’s time you saw our new home.”

“Do you really mean it?” Claire tried to sit up but moving for her was a little slower these days.

“Of course I do,” he said as he folded the letter. “This is going to be a busy week and you need to say where everything is supposed to go.”

The letter was from the furniture company in San Francisco indicating their furniture, ordered many months before, had been completed and shipped. It was due to arrive on Friday.

Adam laughed as her tears fell silently. He’d worked to provide what he promised.

Claire realized he’d kept that promise.

* * * * * * * * * *

Hop Sing rushed to get breakfast on the table. It was hearty but simple fare this morning. He had things to do and wanted to get on his way.

“You hurry up and eat. I have busy day today.”

“Hop Sing you’re being a might pushy this morning don’t you think?” asked Hoss.

Hop Sing’s look gave Hoss his answer. Hoss started to eat quickly.

“What’s got Hop Sing in such a hurry this morning?” Joe inquired.

Ben smiled and said, “The new stove for Adam’s house is being delivered and Hop Sing is going to be the inspector.”

“Inspector?” Joe chuckled as he took a mouthful of potatoes. “What’s to inspect? Isn’t a stove a stove?”

“Joe, Adam asked Hop Sing to be sure the stove was set up and put in place so there’d be no problems. He’s very honored.”

“One thing Hop Sing does know little brother is his way around a stove,” added Hoss.

“Well I will say that’s the easy part of the job. Adam had his men working non-stop for the last month. Even Hoss and I have the calluses to prove how hard a task master he is.”

“Joe that’s because you didn’t have sense enough to stay clear of the building site,” laughed Hoss.

“I’ve got to say I’m proud of you two and your brother,” Ben interjected. It’s been a long time coming and hard work, but it’s completed. I believe Adam said he was going to take Claire out to see it today.”

“She’s gonna be plum knocked off her feet. It’s a great home and Adam did a terrific job.”

“Hoss,” Joe added sarcastically, “The last thing we want is for Claire to be knocked off her feet – but you’re right. It’s a fine home. Adam did a job he should be proud of. I know I’m proud of him.”

“It sure is,” Ben said with a smile. “I’m sure it’ll be filled with as much love and joy as this place has been.”

Hop Sing reappeared. “What! Not finish yet. If you not finish now you clean kitchen and wash dishes!”

Ben wiped his mouth and said, “You heard the man. Let’s get a move on. We have work to do.”

“Yeah not only here but this weekend,” Joe almost complained. “Adam’s furniture is arriving from San Francisco and then there’s going to be the move to the new house.”

Hoss looked at Ben and asked, “Pa what are you so full of smiles for?”

“I’m just excited and can’t wait to help them get settled. This is a grand time for us Cartwrights! Now let’s get a move on.”

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Claire felt great. Today she was accompanying her family to a viewing of their new home.

Mrs. Pickett arrived in what appeared to be her Sunday best for this occasion. Although she’d been a friend to the Cartwrights, she felt especially honored to be a part of this day.

As Claire reached for her shawl, Mrs. Pickett finished braiding Shelley’s hair into two braids and affixed a small bow to the ends. She’d grown very found of this growing three year old and Claire. The heart of this woman shown through.

Claire felt a kick from the baby and Mrs. Pickett smiled. She was wise beyond her years and with a smile spoke to Claire. “Making a decision to have a child is momentous. It’s to decide forever to have your heart walking around outside your body.”

Claire was moved by the words and hugged her. Mrs. Pickett stroked Shelley’s head gently and just nodded at Claire.

A call came from outside. It was Adam. “Are we going to waste the day? Ladies I’m ready.” He was more than excited.

Shelley bounced out the door and ran to him. “Whoa,” he said as he lifted her high into the air and put her into the carriage.

“Whoa for horses papa.”

“You’re absolutely right. I’ll try to remember that.” He smiled pulling on one of her braids.

Claire and Mrs. Pickett walked out slowly. Adam acknowledged how lovely Mrs. Pickett looked and she smiled gracefully.

Claire looked vibrant and fresh. Excitement was visible in her eyes that far surpassed the blueness of the sky. Carefully he assisted her and then Mrs. Pickett into the carriage.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

In a split second Shelley plopped into Adam’s lap to help him drive the carriage. The distance traveled was not far, but the location of their new home was far beyond the setting of their present dwelling.

A slight turn toward the sunlight welcomed them through the tree lined road that led to the house. Mrs. Pickett’s eyes focused on the mountains in the distance and smiled as she heard the sound of birds singing. For her this was sign of good luck.

Halting the carriage, Adam smiled at Claire. “From this point on I want you to close your eyes until I tell you to open them.”

Claire opened her mouth to speak but closed it and did what was requested. The carriage moved slowly and then stopped.

The words “O my,” from Mrs. Pickett escaped.

Adam leaned over and kissed Claire on the cheek. “Welcome home sweetheart.”

From the slight crest in the road that led to their home Claire viewed what she’d only seen in Adam’s drawings. What lay before her left her speechless.

For as far as the eye could see, the blueness of the sky skirted the mountains and trees that held court across from the wideness of the lake … a lake that spread out its watery arms as if saying welcome.

The house was larger than Claire dreamed. She placed her hands over her mouth.

“This is a first,” Adam teased. “Doesn’t seem you have anything to say.”

He moved the carriage closer and pulled it to a stop.

Shelley jumped down and Adam helped Mrs. Pickett. Realizing Adam and Claire should have this moment together; she took Shelley by the hand and started their own outside tour.

Adam looked at Claire and waited. She extended her hand for his assistance. When her feet touched the earth she leaned into him and held him tightly. He placed his arms around her and smiled as she tried to find words. He put an end to this search when he found her lips and kissed her gently – not once but several times.

“Adam its so beautiful.”

Adam had not neglected any detail. The house was of the finest pines, two stories tall, and spread out against Nature’s background. It was a gift to Claire. It was a painting.

The porch wrapped around the entire house. Inside the rooms were large and inviting. The great room contained a large stone fireplace over which Adam had already hung his wedding gift from Claire, his portrait. Large windows provided a view of the lake. The size was overwhelming for Claire but she spotted something special. Adam arranged for her grand piano to be in place just in front of the ceiling to floor window. Upon it he’d placed the same photos that had adorned it when in St. Louis. He added one more – their wedding photo.

Still no words came from Claire. She just placed her hand on her stomach and leaned against him.

“Are you alright?”

All Claire could do was nod her head yes.

The dining room was expansive and the view was equally inviting. The tour continued to the bright kitchen; to ‘her’ room brightly lit by the sun for her painting; his den.

“Can you manage the stairs?”

Her wide eyes said yes. Slowly they made their way. Once reaching the top she stopped. She’d contained her tears as long as she could. Adam handed her a handkerchief and leaned against the carefully carved molding that adorned the entire house.

He smiled as her tears of joy flowed. Composing herself she finally spoke. “I am so … so … very happy Mr. Cartwright. You’ve given us something that will last for ever. It’s so beautiful. I don’t ever want to be anywhere else and I don’t ever want to be without you.”

Adam showed her the master suite, Shelley’s bedroom, and three other bedrooms.

“Adam so many bedrooms!” exclaimed Claire.

He just gave her a grin and said, “It’s always best to be prepared,” and winked at her.

Shelley and Mrs. Pickett walked inside. The squeals of Shelley and the sound of tiny footsteps running around invited Claire and Adam downstairs.

Joining Mrs. Pickett, Adam seated Claire on the piano bench and offered his arm to Mrs. Pickett. He started a tour for her and Claire started playing selections from Bach.

THIRTEEN

The sun set on a beautiful day. Adam’s love was evident in the work he’d put in to complete their home. Mrs. Pickett rambled on about the new house until she left for the day. Shelley was asleep for the night.

Claire, dressed for bed, moved slowly around the parlor looking at memories shared there. She was feeling full and happy. From nowhere she started humming and as if she was in a dream, started moving to the sound of her tune.

Adam came in and smiled at the site. The soft white fabric of her gown rested gently over her burgeoning midsection. Her matching robe flowed gently as she moved because she was unable to secure it but she didn’t mind. The sheen of her loosely hanging hair seemed to caress her shoulders.

Adam was freshly washed and shaven. He watched as Claire and her imaginary partner moved gracefully. He started singing the words to the song she was humming. A smile graced her face.

Claire was full of life and beautiful. Adam continued to sing as he took her in his arms and they danced around the parlor. It was another moment in time for them they’d always have.

Adam slowly finished the song and their dance ended. He placed his hand on the life inside her and kissed her tenderly. The look on her face was more than words could have described.

Adam suggested they call it a day. There was more to be done tomorrow. Claire indicated she was too excited to sleep. Adam suggested they go to bed anyway. If she couldn’t sleep they could talk. She agreed.

Claire had been experiencing difficulty finding a comfortable position to sleep in and generally ended sleeping on her side. Tonight she sat up propped on pillows and talked about all the things needing to be done for the move.

Adam lay with his hands folded behind his head and listened. Claire placed her hand on his bare chest and he kissed it.

“Sweetheart, we need to get some rest,” he said.

“I know Adam, but I’m finding it hard for more than one reason.”

He understood but insisted. Claire edged herself down and pulled the covers up. It was just a moment before she turned from lying flat on her back to her side.

“Adam …”

He reached for the extra pillow and put it under her head, kissed her and turned out the lamp.

Aunt Maggie and Mrs. Pickett spent the next two days working with Claire to pack up the house. Heavy items were handled by Adam and Joe. Shelley was handled by Grandpa Ben. Hoss ensured the wagons to move the furniture were arranged for. Hop Sing ensured nourishment was prepared. It was a true ‘family’ event.

Claire took a break and walked outside with her uncle. The words spoken were from their hearts. Her uncle picked some spring flowers and handed them to Claire. He was happy for her and the life she had. Memories of her parents crossed his mind and he knew they were looking down on her.

From the distance Adam saw them walking together and knew life was good.

Uncle Hank felt the specialness of this moment. He breathed in the air and all of his senses awakened fully to the happiness of his niece. Claire gently sat down and he joined her.

“I’m truly blessed Uncle Hank,” she said. “I have a wonderful husband, daughter and life.”

He listened to her words but noticed something she wasn’t saying. He knew her too well.

“What aren’t you saying?” he asked.

She smiled. “You do know me. I suppose I should have this conversation with Aunt Maggie but I’m nervous about having this baby.”

He laughed lightly. “I’m nervous too.”

Their smiles complimented each other. Hank continued, “What do you suppose Adam is feeling?”

“I think he’ll be glad when this is over.”

“Dear it won’t be over … it’ll be just starting.” Hank helped her up and with arms wrapped around each other headed her toward the house.

Friday morning Claire rose early and prepared breakfast for the Cartwright men. Hoss and Joe were due to arrive early and she’d promised to feed them. Adam walked into the kitchen buttoning his shirt. The aroma of coffee and breakfast foods floated in the air. He kissed her neck and she smiled.

Tucking his shirt into his pants he looked outside. It was going to be a good day weather wise. Taking her hand he pulled her to a seat.

“Adam I need to finish breakfast. Hoss and Joe will be here any minute.”

“I want you to listen to me Claire. I think you’re doing more than you should and I want you to stop … as least slow down.”

Claire started to say something and Adam stopped her by putting his hand up. “Doc Martin says the baby is due this month and I don’t want you doing any more than is absolutely necessary.”

Claire recognized the seriousness in his eyes but had to say what she thought. “Adam I hear you but I feel fine. I know you’re being cautious but I’m not going to do any more than I can handle.”

“Claire, promise me that you’ll stop and take it easy. I need to hear that from you before I leave here this morning.”

In the recesses of her mind she knew his concerns. Her loved for him caused her to say, “I promise Adam. I’ll do less and take it easy. I don’t want to cause you any more stress than necessary … and if the truth be told, I am getting tired.”

His eyes were intense and there was no arguing with his request. He was thinking of her and needed this answer. She knew he was worried and she wanted to relieve him of that worry.

Before she knew it the Cartwright men had shown up. She was finishing getting breakfast on the table when they walked in the door.

“Big day brother,” said Joe. “I’ve decided I’d supervise the move of the furniture from town and …”

“And nothing Joe,” quipped Hoss. “You’re supervising means you’re not planning on doing any work.”

“Shhhh ….” Claire said with a smile. “Shelley’s still sleeping.”

Adam ushered them into the kitchen. Ben kissed Claire and slapped Adam on his back.

Breakfast was eaten quickly and the brothers headed toward the door for town and the carting company. Furniture had arrived in Virginia City. It would now arrive at a new home.

Adam kissed Claire long and tenderly as he was leaving. Hoss blushed and Joe smiled. “Remember your promise,” Adam said and left with his brothers.

Claire started back toward the kitchen with Ben. In an hour or so Mrs. Pickett and Aunt Maggie would arrive.

“More coffee Ben?” Claire asked.

“Yes, if I can count on your company,” Ben said with a smile. “It’s not often I get a chance to sit with my daughter all alone. I’m looking forward to having Shelley with me today. She’s becoming quite a little talker.”

Claire brought the coffee pot to the table and as she was about to pour felt a sharp pain.

Her sigh alarmed Ben. He helped her sit down easily as his heart raced vigorously.

“Claire, are you alright?”

The pain ceased and she breathed more easily. “I think so.”

*FOURTEEN

Ben’s nervousness eased as he watched Claire become more relaxed.

“That was a bit of a surprise,” Claire managed to say after the pain subsided. She rested her hand on her stomach.

She saw the concerned look on Ben’s face and tried to reassure him she felt much better – actually she was trying to reassure herself as well. She was nervous and Adam wasn’t home. It’s too early for the baby. Perhaps Adam was right all along. I shouldn’t have been doing so many things, I should have rested more.

She was told giving birth for the first time does not always adhere to a calendar. There can be some decisions the baby controls and she’d just have to go along with it. She hoped today was not the day the baby was going to take control.

Ben knew he needed to do something. He had to remain calm and assure Claire remained the same. He’d move her to a space that was more comfortable. He prayed Shelley would remain asleep. He wished that Maggie and Mrs. Pickett would walk through the door that instant. Beyond that, he wanted above all to be able to fetch Doc Martin and get Adam right away.

Ben assisted Claire up the stairs and required her to lie down. He removed her shoes and gently pulled the blanket over her. So much of Adam’s birth came back to him. Claire seemed comfortable. He couldn’t help but remember the conversation Adam had with him recently – he was worried about something going wrong or even worse, losing her. Ben shook the conversation from his mind and concentrated on Claire.

Ben held her hand and stroked it. “As soon as your aunt or Mrs. Pickett arrives, I’m sending for Doc Martin and Adam. While we wait, is there anything more I can do to make you comfortable?”

She smiled the way he remembered. Always with a gleam in her eye. “Yes. As a matter of fact there is something if you don’t mind.”

“Whatever you want it’s yours.”

Claire moved to make herself more comfortable which alarmed Ben. “I’m fine so get rid of that look on your face,” she quipped. “I just wanted to get more comfortable.”

Ben didn’t want her to know it but he sighed with relief and tried to dismiss the nervous feeling he had.

“Are you having any pain or not feeling like yourself?” What a question to ask he thought …feeling like yourself, indeed!

“I’m feeling better but a bit tired. I guess too much packing yesterday and then getting up extra early today.”

“Well then you should close your eyes and try to rest. Everything here will be taken care of in good stead.” He was glad he’d decided to ride over with Joe and Hoss.

“I’ll close my eyes but you’re not getting off that easy. If it wouldn’t disturb you, I’d like to hear about Adam and his growing up years. Perhaps some of the juicy stuff he wouldn’t want me to know,” she laughed.

Ben laughed along with her. He still held her hand, but was now in a place he could hear the sound of a six year old boy calling him. Claire watched the man she’d come to respect and love – gave thanks he was allowing her on this journey of memories.

What surprised her was where he began. She knew it must have been painful for him but he started from the beginning … the very beginning … finding out Elizabeth was expecting. He spoke in soft loving tones as he relived Adam’s life for her. The man whose voice could shake the roof off a house was as mild and soft as she’d ever heard it.

There was no telling how much time had passed as Claire listened to a man share his heart and soul with her. He recounted their travels west, the idiosyncrasies Adam began to develop, the pains he’d endured and the responsibilities thrust upon him at a young age. His love of books and education. Having to be strong and become a man before his time.

Ben paused for a moment and smiled at Claire. He was being purified by a simple request from the woman who would be the mother of his grandchild.

Claire was quiet and watched the face of the man who continued to speak with a depth of love there was no measurement for. He told her of the times he’d taken Adam to the woodshed, how Adam set examples for his brothers, how he’d come to depend upon Adam, perhaps more than he should have, the sense of humor Adam contained, his long history of cryptic sarcasm, his sense of humor and above all his love for family.

Claire now held Ben’s hand. Their bonding was more than either of them imagined. Ben’s words painted a complete picture for her of the man that chose her for his wife. Words spoken allowed her into the private recesses of her father-in-law. Something she would cherish for ever. Family.

Their conversation seemed surreal in some ways. Ben was proud of Adam and the man he’d become without actually saying it. This time of reflection and remembrance was comforting for the two of them.

* * * * * * * * * *

A carriage pulled up and Ben looked out the window. It was Mrs. Pickett.

“It’s Mrs. Pickett,” he advised Claire. “I’ll let her in and then get the doctor and Adam.”

As he started to hurry from the bedroom Claire called him. “Dad, thank you for the gift. Both Adam and I are lucky to have you.”

Ben didn’t know what to say. He merely smiled and left.

“Mrs. Pickett I’m glad you’re here,” Ben said anxiously. For some reason his nervousness returned.

“It’s good to see you Ben. I’m glad to see you as well,” she responded as she removed her bonnet.

“What I mean is that Claire had a rather severe pain this morning and she’s in bed now. I’m going to get the doctor and Adam.”

“How long ago did she have this pain?”

“Ah … ah I guess maybe forty-five minutes.”

“Ummm,” was all Mrs. Pickett said.

Ben searched her face for some sort of an answer.

“She could be starting labor but she still has a few weeks to go. Any more pains since that one?”

“No.”

“You best get the doctor. I’ll see to her.”

* * * * * * * * * *

Ben made it to town in record time. Doc Martin was just opening his office when he rode up.

“Ben, you’re in town early.”

“Paul, it’s Claire. You need to come and see about her.”

“Ben calm down. What happened?”

“Well this morning she had a terrible pain. It could be the baby is coming. Adam isn’t home and I’ve left her with Mrs. Pickett.”

Paul knew the chances of an early delivery. “Any other signs?”

Nervously Ben replied “Signs? No, I don’t think so. I got her in bed and she seemed comfortable when I left. I’m going to find Adam and head back out there.”

Doc Martin placed his bag into his carriage and headed out of town.

Ben made his way to the carting company and saw Hoss.

“Pa, I didn’t expect you to be coming into town. Look at all of these crates. I’m just glad the carting company has everything all packed and ready to make the delivery. I think by the end of the day all the furniture should be in place.”

Ben interrupted him, “Hoss where’s Adam?”

“He’s in the office with Joe. Soon as he’s finished with the paperwork we’re heading to the new house.”

Seeing the look on his father’s face and hearing his tone of voice he knew something wasn’t right. “Pa what’s the matter?

“Well son I’m not sure, but it could be Claire is in labor. Paul is on his way out there,” he said as he left to get Adam.

Adam was laughing when he and Joe walked out of the carting office.

“Adam!” Ben called.

Adam saw the look on his father’s face and immediately knew it had to do with Claire.

“Son, I don’t want to worry you but as soon as you left this morning Claire had a severe pain.”

Adam’s eyes darkened and he headed immediately for his horse. Joe and Hoss watched.

“Adam, wait just a minute,” Ben said stopping him. “She’s resting well with Mrs. Pickett and Paul is on his way out there.”

Adam’s heart raced and he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

He stopped in front of Joe and handed him come carefully wrapped papers. “Since you’re the self-appointed supervisor, this is the floor plan Claire and I arranged for the placement of the furniture. Make sure it gets placed!”

The dust Adam kicked up as he rode off left his brother coughing. “You think Adam’s in a hurry?” asked Joe.

“If I were him, I’d be in a hurry too,” added Hoss. “Guess it’s just about time we became uncles.”

Joe smiled broadly at the thought. He was happy and looked at the grin on Hoss’s face.

“Let’s get this furniture out there and in place brother, I don’t think Adam’s mind is on it at the moment.”

Shelley woke up and saw Mrs. Pickett. “Mama,” she called.

“Your mama’s in the bed resting for a while. Why don’t you go in and say good morning?”

Shelley bounced in and crawled up on the bed. Claire pulled her to her and kissed her warmly.

“Time to get up mama,” Shelley said as she tried to pull the blanket.

“Shelley, mama is a little tired this morning and I need to stay in bed for a little while longer. Do you understand?”

Shelley looked puzzled and said, “You don’t feel well? I stay with you.”

Claire kissed her tousled hair and said, “That sounds like a fine idea but I think you need to do something with Mrs. Pickett first. I want you to let her help you wash and get dressed. I then want you to eat your breakfast. Can you do that for me?”

“OK. I can do it.”

“Fine. Now go with Mrs. Pickett. I’ll be right here.”

Mrs. Pickett sent Shelley back to her bedroom and turned to Claire.

“How are you feeling Claire? Any more pains?”

“No. Perhaps it was nothing but I do feel some lower back pain.”

“Your time is getting near dear. It’s going to be alright and I’ll be back as soon as I get Shelley settled. You call out if you need me sooner.”

Claire thanked her and closed her eyes.

Doc Martin reached the house and Mrs. Pickett let him in. She told Shelley she’d be right back and to stay at the table.

Knocking softly on the door, she entered followed by Dr. Martin.

“Claire. Claire, “ she said softly. Claire turned and saw Doc Martin. A smile crossed her face.

Mrs. Pickett closed the door.

“Claire, I understand we need to find out what’s going on,” he said in his gentle and comforting manner.

“Thank you for coming out Doctor Martin. I feel much better with you here.”

Removing his jacket, he rolled up his sleeves to start his examination.

It was only a few minutes later that Adam arrived. He stopped his horse but he continued to move. Opening the door he looked at Mrs. Pickett.

“What’s happening?” he asked.

“The doctor’s with her. I’m afraid we’re going to have to wait.”

Adam ran his fingers through his hair and walked around in a circle finally stopping and looking up the stairs as if an answer was going to walk down to meet him.

Ben came in and saw Adam’s look. “C’mon son. Let’s have a seat. Paul will tell us every detail.” He looked into the kitchen and said, “I think there’s a little person who could use a breakfast partner.”

Adam smiled when he saw Shelley. She filled his heart and replaced his concern.

Things were getting busy with people. Claire’s Aunt Maggie and Uncle Hank arrived for the move. Immediately they realized something was going on when they saw Doc Martin’s carriage.

After a brief conversation, they waited. Their form of waiting was sealing boxes and casting glances at the stairs.

Adam became restless because he wanted to see Claire – be with Claire. Ben recognized the look on Adam’s face as he tried to play with Shelley while he waited. They all tried to go about different tasks – and waited.

Mrs. Pickett took Shelley outside when Doc Martin called for Adam. His feet never touched the stairs.

Closing the door he looked at Claire and immediately went to her side. He sat on the bed and kissed her and held her to him. “Claire …..”

“Shhh,” she said as she put her finger on his lips.

His eyes were filled with questions. He kissed her again as his heart raced.

“Uhh ummm,” Doc Martin cleared his throat to gain their attention.

Adam turned and looked with piercing eyes at Doc Martin. Claire rested her head on his shoulder and he put his arm around her. Claire felt his heart beating.

“Claire is going to have a baby but it won’t be today. I’ve examined her thoroughly and what I’ve found is the baby is descending into her lower pelvis. What she had today was a contraction but not a real one. The baby’s head is settling which indicates it won’t be long now.”

Adam dropped his head and then looking at Claire kissed her head.

“What should we be doing?” Adam asked.

“I’ve explained all of this to Claire, but to make it easier for you let me say stretching is beginning to take place in preparation for the baby’s birth. When this happens it sometimes causes contractions. After examining Claire, she has a ways to go … but it won’t be long.”

Adam sighed a sigh of relief.

Doc Martin smiled. “You two are going to have a beautiful baby.”

“Thanks Paul. I’m not going to leave her side.”

Doc Martin smiled. He was happy for the two of them.

“I’ve been told you were planning to move today. I think you can continue with your plans, however, Claire is not to do any lifting or moving of anything. For her pain right now let her lay down. This should also help with her backache. I’m not saying she’s confined to bed. She can get up and move around.”

“When do you think we should expect ….”

Adam was interrupted by Doc Martin. “I can only give you an honest guess Adam. I would say this week.”

Doc Martin smiled, rolled his sleeves down and said, “Claire, I’ll be ready when you are,” and closed the door.

Adam and Claire’s hug lingered for an eternity.

FIFTEEN

It hadn’t been enough the day was filled with excitement of the move; it had been compounded with the birth process beginning.

Claire was now resting with Shelley as her caregiver of the afternoon. She snuggled close to her mother and jabbered away. Adam checked regularly.

Claire had insisted that Adam not halt the scheduled move. Everything was ready and her episode was not something she wanted to stop their plans. It was true more was going on than a normal birth of a child, but she assured Adam and her family it would be better to continue. The way things were they’d find it difficult to locate most items because they were already packed and ready to go.

Adam conceded and the family joyfully complied. This would be a day for them to remember.

Aunt Maggie prepared lunch for both Claire and Shelley and sat at the foot of the bed as they ate. She talked with Claire about what was taking place downstairs and tried to ease the worries, if any, Claire had.

Adam was in control of his emotions and in control of getting items out of the house. Ben laughed as he heaved and lifted. Hank countered with more tall tales as he helped.

Mrs. Pickett stopped in to check Claire was resting as ordered. She was leaving to put some of the domestic items in place at the new house. Smiling, Claire thanked her for all she’d done.

Aunt Maggie came to remove the lunch tray and make sure Shelley relieved herself so that both she and her mother could rest for a while.

“How are you feeling dear?”

“I’m feeling a little bit embarrassed with the commotion I caused today,” Claire said.

“Nonsense. I could tell you stories that would have you laughing. It all goes with the territory of having a baby.”

“I’m sure you could. Thank you for understanding and being here for me. There’s so much you’ve helped me with.”

“I’m going over to the house now with Mrs. Pickett. Adam will bring you and Shelley later after you’ve rested. Right now though, I’m going to send Adam up to see you.”

Nothing remained downstairs. Nothing remained upstairs but the bedroom furniture Claire and Shelley occupied.

Outside, the small house that had become a home was beginning to say its farewell.

“Son, we’ve accomplished a record I’d say,” Ben said as he removed his gloves. His smile radiated. “This is the last of it. We’re heading to unload.”

Adam’s look said thank you. As Ben seated himself in the wagon, Adam stopped him.

“Pa.”

“Yes son?”

Words were hard for him.

“I understand Adam. Now you take care of the family. We’ll see you later.”

Adam stood with his hands on his hips as he watched the last of the wagon’s dust disappear.

Shelley had fallen asleep and it wasn’t going to be long before Claire followed. She was waiting for Adam.

Stroking Shelley’s hair he covered her carefully and quietly pulled up a chair next to Claire. Leaning forward resting his arms on his legs, he watched her. This week he thought. He smiled and felt something within he couldn’t structure a sentence around.

Claire opened her eyes and saw his gentle look. “You look like a tired happy man if that’s possible,” she said.

“Really?”

“Really.”

“How about you rest with us? I think you can use it.”

“Mrs. Cartwright I couldn’t think of a better idea.”

The three Cartwrights slept in anticipation of their new home and the new life.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

The afternoon turned an empty few hours into a beautifully filled home. The carting company had done its job. Joe, using Adam’s drawings, orchestrated the placement of the furniture.

Hoss and a few of Ben’s hands helped the carters get things into place. Maggie and Mrs. Pickett hung curtains and draperies, and then placed the clothing away.

Hop Sing put the kitchen in order while Uncle Hank placed the carpets in the appropriately marked places.

What had become a dream was now a home. Smiles glowed on the faces of Ben, Hank, Mrs. Pickett, Maggie, Hoss, Joe and Hop Sing.

“Beautiful,” said Ben.

Hop Sing came from the kitchen carrying a tray of libation.

“This call for celebration. Beautiful home. Many hands made light work. Time to enjoy and wait for family.”

“Hop Sing, that’s a great idea,” Hoss said as he helped himself to a glass of lemonade and sat down.

They’d done the work that made the difference. Each sat and took in the beauty of the space. They rested and felt no tiredness – just relished in the familial relationships that were about to continue to grow.

*
SIXTEEN

The Adam Cartwright family took a last look around where they’d spent the last eight months. Yes, memories were existent like the air one breathed, but memories could not be taken away. It was time to start their new memories.

Adam placed Shelley in the carriage. Both Claire and he’d had several conversations at length about the move, the new house, and her new room. This was an exciting day for Shelley.

Adam watched as Claire breathed in the last of their first home and embedded it in her mind.

“Are you ready?” he asked softly.

Claire placed her hand on the one resting on her shoulder and said, “I’m very ready Adam. Very ready.”

He took every precaution to gently assist her into the carriage. Claire smiled when Adam said, “Let’s go home.”

The departure wasn’t one of sadness; after all they were still on Ponderosa land. Adam planned and built a home with love and focus. Claire provided the support he needed and the end result was a combined creation. It was theirs in every sense of the word.

Claire laid her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes. She wanted to remember this moment. The spring afternoon was drawing to a close but the hues still emanating from the sun spoke volumes. The yellows, deep oranges, and gold sat gently on the horizon. An omen? Perhaps – of the warmth and glow of their life.

They arrived home. Claire shivered and held Shelley’s hand. Adam looked and remained silent. He had quite a lot to be proud of. As they approached the house they could hear conversation and laughter.

Adam opened the door and Shelley ran in. Before Claire could place her foot over the threshold, Adam lifted her and carried her in. There was a round of hoorays and applause as they entered.

“We were wondering when you’d finally get her,” said Claire’s Uncle Hank. “Hope you don’t mind our making ourselves right at home.”

Claire was astounded. She placed her hand on her stomach and Adam ushered her in. “Welcome home.”

“Adam it’s absolutely beautiful.” Claire walked further into the house and looked at all that had been accomplished. It was as if they’d been living there for ever.

Adam looked at Joe and winked. Joe smiled.

“Claire come sit down,” her aunt insisted.

“I will, but I just want to look around. I can’t get over the fact that it’s my home,” she grinned. She walked around and looked at the spaces that were now filled with items that replaced the echo of the empty rooms.

Shelley was bouncing around and found her way to a window. “Water!” she pointed. She was mesmerized by the view and her small eyes seemed to be taking everything in.

Hoss spoke in a loud voice. “I don’t care what’s been said about education, but I want you to know that I’m proud of my brother Adam and what he’s done. He can read as many books as he wants and won’t hear a complaint from me.”

“It’s a wonderful home Adam,” Maggie added. “I’m sure there’ll be many happy times here.”

Adam carefully watched as Claire made her way around the room. The floor plans they worked out for size and placement of the furniture all fell into place. The quality of the furniture was solid and would not have to be replaced. Claire was speechless.

As comments and laughter were being made around them, Adam’s eyes focused on Claire. He knew the look in her eyes. She finally turned, and from across the room the two of them stared at each other. Quiet settled in and the faces of family wondered. At that moment the only people in the room for that instant were Mr. and Mrs. Adam Cartwright.

Adam’s eyes were warm and admiring. Claire spoke as she walked toward him. “Adam it’s so beautiful. I love our home and I love you with all my heart.”

His smile was met by a kiss.

Energetic Joe could not contain himself. “Whoo Hoo!”

Maggie and Hop Sing prepared dinner and all ate in the dining room including Hop Sing.

“Now, this is not what I would call a house warming,” said Ben. “I’d call it a family warming.” He raised his glass of imported wine he’d brought from the Ponderosa and toasted his son’s achievement, his daughter and baby, Shelley, joy, good health and prosperity for all of them and many more times such as this.

“I’m looking for many more times like this,” Claire added. “But let’s hope they don’t always include my having a baby.”

Hoss nudged Joe. “What?”

Hoss nodded his head toward the door.

“What?”

Hoss again nodded his head toward the door. Frustrated he elbowed Joe and said, “Now is the time Joe.”

“Oh … yeah, right.” Joe disappeared.

Conversation was waning. Mrs. Pickett had taken Shelley for her bath while Maggie helped Hop Sing clean the kitchen. The lamps, now lit, shown a beautiful cast of light throughout the great room. The light reached Claire and she slowly slid forward and rose. Following the beckoning of the lamp light, she walked to the piano and sat down.

Her every move was carefully watched by the father to be. Within moments Claire started to play. She was happy and her face showed it. Whatever concerns she’d had over having Adam’s baby were now floating in the perfect lilting sounds of her music. The family was happy, rested, and content.

Joe returned and placed the item down. “You could have at least helped me,” he said sarcastically to Hoss.

Claire finished and smiled. Almost apologetically she said, “I just had to play.”

Her happiness was visible as was Adam’s.

“Well,” Ben said as he clapped his hands together and stood up. “It’s been a wonderful day and I think it’s about time we left and let Adam and Claire settle in.”

“You’re right pa, but before we leave we have something for Adam and Claire,” Hoss said lifting the gift. He carried it to the middle of the room. Ben beamed. He knew what it was.

“Come on you two, we can’t leave until you open this,” ordered Joe.

Adam raised his eyebrows and helped Claire as she knelt down to open it. She carefully started removing the wrapping.

Joe was giddy and smiling in anticipation. Hoss’s heart was becoming full.

Removing the wrapping, the sound of the paper began to talk. Adam helped Claire with the last bit of it.

She placed her hands over her mouth and found herself sitting on the floor. She leaned against Adam and with filled eyes looked at Ben, Hoss and Joe. “This is so beautiful. Thank you. Thank all of you.”

Under Ben’s tutelage, Joe and Hoss had resurrected Joe’s baby cradle. They spent a number of hours refinishing the fine wood to perfection. It was beautiful and touched both the hearts of Adam and Claire.

Claire’s tears of appreciation began to flow.

“Claire don’t you like it?” asked Hoss.

Choking out her words she said, “It’s beautiful. I’m just so thankful and so happy.”

Claire rubbed her hands over the beautiful cradle and felt it rock back and forth.

Her tears flowed more fully now and Adam smiled. She wiped her eyes with Adam’s help.

Her Aunt Maggie presented them with a beautifully sewn padding for the cradle and matching blanket. This brought more tears.

“Claire there’s one thing I must say I love about you. You cry the softest of any happy woman I’ve ever known,” Ben added.

Adam rose and with the assist of his father helped Claire off the floor. It was a bit of a struggle for her to find her center of balance and ultimately they all laughed. Before she seated herself, she hugged Ben, Joe, and Hoss. They knew how special this gift was for them. Adam smiled at each of his brothers. That was his thanks.

Well it’s not late but we need to be heading home. We’ll be by in the morning,” Ben added. “Now I just want to give my granddaughter a good night kiss before I go.”

At that moment, Shelley in her soft green nightgown came bouncing down her new stairs with her teddy bear in tow. Ben grabbed her up and smelled the sweet aroma of soap.

They kissed and goodbyes were heartfelt. Mrs. Pickett indicated she’d return in the morning and had thoroughly enjoyed the day. She was teary eyed as well.

Claire and Adam received hugs from Maggie and Hank.

“You be sure to get us when things start to happen,” added Hank as he left.

“I’ll be right back,” Adam said and walked his family out.

The discussion only took a moment and all had been settled. Hop Sing left Claire with a cup of his special tea and rushed to get a ride home.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

Shelley was escorted to her new room. She was happy but it was time for her to sleep. The nightly ritual took place and within a few minutes of closing her eyes, she had drifted off.

Claire walked across the hallway into their bedroom. She sat in the window seat and looked outside at the reflection of the moon on the lake. It was beautiful.

“Adam sit with me for a while.”

He slid next to her and for the first time together they looked out at the Nevada night – together from their home.

Adam asked Claire to get ready for bed. He wanted her to rest. It had been a day full of surprises and miracles – and she felt he was right.

As she was putting on her nightgown, there was a sound of a horse arriving and then a knock on the door.

“I’ll be right back,” Adam said leaving Claire wondering who could be arriving. Claire could hear the sound of voices but could not make out the sound of the second voice.

She climbed into the new feather bed and waited. Adam returned.

“Who was that?”

“It’s Joe. He’s spending the night,” Adam replied as he started to remove his shirt.

Claire looked at Adam waiting for his explanation.

He quickly washed and joined her.

“Well?” she asked.

“I asked each of my brothers to take turns staying at night. If you should go into labor, I need to be sure the doctor can be gotten. I’m not leaving you alone.”

“Thank you Adam. It’s obvious you think of everything.”

* * * * * * * * * * * *

The following two days were beautiful. Claire felt heavy but wonderful. The back ache was gone and she was spending time outside with Shelley determining where flowers would be placed and taking short walks with her. Life was good even with a different brother staying with them each night. Only Adam would do this she thought.

Claire, Adam and Shelley had a wonderful third day in their home. Shelley spent time outside with Adam and Claire took life easy and spent time enjoying her home and playing the piano.

It was late afternoon when Hoss arrived for his turn to be the rider to get Doc Martin if the need arose during the evening. He came earlier than usual because he wanted to spend time with Shelley and get some of Maggie’s apple pie.

Shelley knew she’d be staying with her Aunt Maggie and Uncle Hank for a day or so and wondered when she’d be able to go.

Hoss and Adam were outside with Shelley. Aunt Maggie was ready to leave but went back into the kitchen to ensure she’d left dinner just warming. It was then she heard it.

“Ahhhhhhh!” It was Claire.

Maggie rushed into the parlor and found Claire leaning against the wall. A puddle was beginning to form in trickles at her feet. It was time.

“Claire, it’s going to be fine. Just stay here, I’m going to get Adam.”

Feeling the contraction ease, Claire tried to breathe easier. She remembered what Doc Martin had said, “I’ll be ready when you are.” This time she was sure – the baby was coming.

SEVENTEEN

Adam held Shelley near the barn. Laughter and playing between Shelley, Hoss and Adam was as special as the day was beautiful.

The weather was warming as spring was making its presence known. Birds returned and with them their songs. Although the sun was lower in the sky at this hour, it continued to caress the blue of the lake and highlight the blue serenity and peace of the sky.

Soft white billows floated high and lofty above stately mountains. Green appeared as far as one’s eyes could see. In the midst of this, a magical transformation had taken place and one yet to reveal itself.

Time and patience had been respected although occasionally hard and worrisome. It was the common denominator that factored itself into so many lives. A calmness had been practiced to ease into that last magical act to be revealed. In the recesses of their minds, the Cartwrights had carefully placed an extra dose of calmness to be used when the time came. The time had now come. They’d soon know the need to reach in and hold onto it.

In an instant, as quickly as one could blink and eye, change was presenting itself. Confidence and faith would be required by Claire. A lack of fear, worry and nervousness would be required by Adam. The Cartwrights would need to support their son and brother.

Maggie strode toward the barn as Shelley hopped down and started running toward her. She smiled at the dark haired child that was calling her name.

“Going home with you today?” asked Shelley. She knew she’d be staying with Aunt Maggie and Uncle Hank, but each day she was told, “Not today sweetie, but soon.”

Hoping the answer today was finally going to be a ‘yes’, Shelley waited.

Adam and Hoss listened to the conversation in amusement.

“She’ll really be surprised when she does leave,” chuckled Hoss.

“Umm huh,” said Adam as he rested against the partially finished corral.

“Yes Shelley. Today you’re going home with me,” Maggie said.

As if cold water followed by hot water had been thrown on him, Adam’s expression changed. He looked at Maggie and she smiled. Hoss would recount later that if his brother was ever stunned, this was it.

Maggie and Adam approached each other. Adam looked toward the house as his heart began to beat a little faster.

“Hoss, why don’t you and Shelley take a short walk for a while? We’ll call you shortly,” Maggie said.

Hoss stood erect and nodded his head. He removed his hat, ran his hand through his hair and replaced it. Keeping his eyes on Adam he said, “Come with me Shelley. I think there’s still some exploring we need to do.”

Hoss and Shelley headed in one direction. Shelley led Hoss because his eyes were focused on his brother and Maggie as they quickly headed toward the house.

Claire managed to toss pieces of the day’s clean laundry into a chair and sat down. She was resting with her head back when Adam reached her side.

“Claire ….,” seemed all Adam was able to get out at that moment.

She smiled and said, “We couldn’t have picked a better day for our baby to arrive.”

His eyes were warmer than she could ever remember. The cleft in his chin moved as he formed his mouth to speak. She loved that part of the handsome rugged face.

Neither let the other know how quickly their hearts were beating. The quiet rhythmic cadence had become a quiet duet.

In a split moment Adam stroked her face as if it were the first time he’d been so deeply smitten. He leaned over and kissed her long and tenderly. As he kissed her, the words spoken by the minister at their wedding became clear as day.

“These are the hands of your best friend, smooth, young and carefree, that are holding yours on your wedding day, as she pledges her love and commitment to you all the days of her life. These are the hands that will hold each child in tender love, soothing them through illness and hurt, supporting and encouraging them along the way, and knowing when it is time to let go.”

“How are you feeling? Shouldn’t we get you into bed? You’re certain it’s today?” Adam asked all questions tenderly as the drum beat within him.

Claire’s Aunt Maggie moved closer.

“I’m feeling better now. I had a contraction that came out of nowhere. I haven’t had another since,” Claire responded without taking her eyes off his.

“You’re absolutely sure?”

Claire smiled and her aunt spoke up. “Yes Adam it’s time. Nature has a way of letting you know.”

“I’ll send Hoss for Doc Martin and then we’ll make you comfortable,” he said as he looked at Maggie seeking her wisdom.

“I think there may be some time before we need send for Doc Martin. We’ll need to begin to time her contractions,” Maggie offered.

Adam held her hand while Maggie busied herself cleaning up Nature’s announcement. Adam and Claire spoke in quiet tones. Maggie was becoming nervous for her niece. Yes, she agreed to keep Shelley but wanted desperately to remain with Claire.

Claire quietly teased Adam which caused him to offer up his deep rich laugh.

“Yes, Mrs. Cartwright! I’m going to be a father!”

The sound of his beautiful laugh spoke to Maggie. He’s a proud and happy man, she thought. I don’t think he can believe it.

Thinking out loud Claire said, “Hoss and Shelley are outside. Hoss has to be worrying … he needs to know what’s happening in here.”

Maggie started for the door when she heard a quiet, “Ahhhhhhhhh!”

Adam grabbed Claire’s hand. He wished with all his heart this was over.

“Whew,” Claire spoke. “That’s wasn’t too bad.” She breathed more comfortably and seemed more relaxed now.

“Aunt Maggie how long?”

“It’s been fifteen minutes by my watch,” was the answer.

“I don’t want Shelley to be worried or afraid. Adam I think we need to talk to her now since she’s going home with Aunt Maggie.”

“I’ll get her,” he said trying not to look worried.

The door was left open as he walked out.

“I’m going to be fine Aunt Maggie. Adam’s here and although he’s trying hard not to show his concerns, I know they’re there.”

Stroking her niece’s arm she smiled remembering her birth experience. “Yes dear. Sometimes I think it’s harder for the man than the woman.”

“I love him so much and know the depths he’d go to be here and help me through this. I couldn’t think of a better way for our child to come into this world … I couldn’t do this if he weren’t here.” Claire smiled at her aunt and said, “In case you didn’t realize it – “The two of us make one!”

Adam saw Hoss approaching with Shelley. The blue of Hoss’s eyes focused on his brother’s smile. Now it was time for his heart to beat faster. This was the day.

”Shelley since you’re going to stay with Aunt Maggie and Uncle Hank, I think it’s time you came in and got ready. Besides, mama wants to talk to you.”

“O tay,” she said and ran into the house.

Claire smiled and prayed she’d not have a contraction while she was speaking to Shelley.

Hoss looked at Claire and then walked over to the window. He was thinking too. “Yep, a beautiful day for a new Cartwright.”

Shelley sat on Claire’s lap which concerned Adam. Maggie assured him if Claire was comfortable it was fine.

Shelley was excited to be going on what Adam had called ‘her first adventure away from home’. Using her hands Claire tried to brush Shelley’s hair from her face and then pulled her close for several kisses. “You’re a little bit of a mess right now but I don’t think Uncle Hank will mind. Do you?”

Shelley shook her head no and laid herself against Claire. Her tiny hand rested on Claire’s abdomen, and as had been something she’d always done, started to easily poke Claire with her finger.

“Sweetheart, today I don’t think poking is a good idea. Besides, what did papa tell you about that?”

Her tiny hand covered her mouth as she looked at her papa. Although he had a smile on his face, Shelley knew to stop.

“Shelley when you get back from Aunt Maggie’s you’re going to have a new brother or sister. That’s going to be your gift for being such a good girl.”

Shelley smiled at her mama. “Papa say baby for all of us. We love baby. I help.”

Adam kneeled down to be on eye level with Shelley. “Now how many people did I say are in our family?” He held up one finger. Shelley counted. He held up two fingers. Shelley counted. He held up three fingers. Shelley counted.

“Three,” she said proud of her counting expertise.

“Now if you remember, we talked about our family getting larger. Now let’s count again so that when you come back home, you’re going to know with the baby how many are going to be in our family,” Adam spoke with a smile.

They went through the same ritual but this time Adam added a finger.

“Four!”

“You’re very smart. Now I think you might want to get down from mama’s lap and get ready to go with Aunt Maggie.”

Claire hugged her again when Adam saw the look on her face change. He quickly picked Shelley up and asked Hoss if he’d take her up to her room to get her bag and her teddy bear. Hoss sensed Claire was having another contraction and moved quickly carrying Shelley with her back to what was taking place.

“Claire, we’ve got to make you more comfortable.”

Regaining her breath Claire agreed with him and said as soon as Shelley left.

This time it was Adam who asked, “How long?”

Maggie spoke quietly to Adam as he followed her into the kitchen. He poured water for Claire while Maggie tried to assure him that he would be alright alone with Claire until she returned and the doctor arrived.

Adam was thankful for all she’d explained to him, and even more thankful that after Shelley was put to bed, she’d return. He’d never had a baby before and Maggie assured him of how things would unfold and what he could do.

She also told him about the confidence Claire expressed with his being there. The look on his face was what she called a serious look of caution mixed with a sprinkling of worry and a heavy dose of rising nervousness. It didn’t matter to Maggie because she knew Adam – he would be fine, strong for Claire, and do whatever was necessary.

Shelley was getting a piggy back ride down the stairs. Kisses were exchanged and out the door went Adam, Hoss, Maggie and Shelley.

Shelley and Maggie settled into their carriage and as they pulled away, Adam waved.

Shelley shouted, “Four.”

“OK Hoss you need to go for Doc Martin.”

“You alright Adam?”

Adam grinned, laughed a little, shook his head, rubbed behind his ear with his finger and finally found the words. “I will be.”

Hoss nodded at his brother and touched his arm. Adam touched his hand.

EIGHTEEN

By the time Adam reentered the house and closed the door, he’d acquired a sense of confidence and control.

“OK Mrs. Cartwright, I think it’s time for us to get you upstairs and make you comfortable.” He helped a very pregnant Claire from the chair and up the stairs.

Claire thought to herself “Make me comfortable?” She wondered how comfortable she’d be. Smiling to herself she felt the joy of having their child in their new home. Adam retrieved a nightgown for her and then assisted her in getting out of her clothes. Claire moved into bed sitting in an upright position against the pillows he’d propped behind her back.

The moment had come and there was no turning back. Nervous silliness seemed to fill Claire and her comments. She was in rare form and realized it as she reminded Adam of the night she’d probably conceived. Adam smiled at the recollection.

Suggesting that she close her eyes and try to rest he wondered how long it would be before the doctor arrived and how smoothly the birth would be for her. His thoughts were interrupted when Claire had another contraction – the duration of which was short – but was one of many more to come. She managed it and looked outside.

The sky was getting darker now as the day was ending. Her hope was that she’d get through this and not make a fool of herself. She’d heard stories about other women and wanted to remain strong for Adam.

Hoss completed his mission. Doc Martin smiled, packed his satchel, and left a note on his office door of his whereabouts. He headed for Maude Billings who often assisted him delivering babies and the two of them headed to Claire.

Hoss headed for the Ponderosa. “Pa! Pa! Joe!” he shouted as he burst through the door.

“Hoss what the matter?” Ben asked anxiously.

“It’s Claire pa. She’s having the baby!”

Ben’s face broke into a wide grin.

“Now?” Joe asked.

“Well not now. She’s getting ready to. I got Doc Martin and he’s headed to Adam’s. Should be there just about now.”

“Hot diggity, we’re gonna be uncles,” Joe shouted. His shout brought Hop Sing into the great room.

Hoss couldn’t contain his excitement. He picked Hop Sing up and said, “Claire’s getting ready to have the baby,” as he swung him around.

Hop Sing couldn’t get angry with the tight squeeze he received from Hoss. He was just as excited.

* * * * * * * * * *

Claire curled on her side and closed her eyes. Adam’s favorite person in the world lay there humming to herself. Holding her hand, Adam’s thoughts turned to reflection as the day’s light continued to wane. The blue sky was disappearing but when Claire opened her eyes, it reappeared for Adam. She felt pain in her lower back but said nothing until she felt the next contraction. It was manageable. Adam, ever conscientious, looked at his watch. He kissed her hand.

Claire remained calm and looked at Adam. She stroked his face and said, “It’s going to be fine. Not get that look off your face will you? You wouldn’t want our child meeting its father for the first time with a look like that,” she teased.

He laughed at the way in which she seemed relaxed and was able to relax him.

“Adam how about some poetry? We’ve got nothing better to do right now and I’d enjoy hearing your voice.”

“Any particular selection?”

“Your choice,” she said. He released her hand and went to the bookcase in their oversized bedroom.

The words he read put a smile on her face. This time together would be yet another memory for the two of them. Adam looked up from the book and saw the simple smile on her face and glow in her eyes. Placing his hand on top of her’s which rested on her abdomen, he continued to read.

Another contraction interrupted the reading. When finished, she thanked him for holding her hand.

The carriage arrived and Adam looked out the window. Relieved, he announced Doc Martin had arrived. Giving her a reassuring kiss he headed down the stairs and opened the door.

“Hello Adam,” Doc Martin said. “I understand Claire’s ready to have the baby we’ve all been waiting for.”

“That’s seems to be the case,” Adam added. He then greeted Mrs. Billings.

“Well if you’ll show me to Claire, I’ll find out how things are progressing.”

Doc Martin and Mrs. Billings followed Adam up the stairs. He opened the door and they entered.

“Well Claire, you look like you’re handling matters well for a woman about to have a baby.” He noticed that she seemed calm and in control.

“I’m trying with Adam’s help,” she responded.

After a brief conversation about the events leading up to his arrival, Doc Martin asked Adam to excuse them while he examined Claire. Reluctantly Adam complied and went downstairs to wait.

He sat looking out at the lake and then closed his eyes. Time was now important for him … time that passed without thought of its meaning on a day to day basis had now become important to him – the measurement of how long before the baby’s arrival was time he wished had passed.

Mrs. Billings came down the stairs and asked Adam where certain items could be found in the house. He was able to find what she needed and she headed back up the stairs. He stood at the foot of the stairs and waited.

A voice called gently, “Mr. Cartwright, Doctor Martin would like you to come up please.”

Adam walked up the stairs and entered the bedroom to a smiling Doc Martin. His sleeves were rolled up and he was putting some instruments away.

“Adam I’ve checked Claire and she’s doing fine. It may be a while yet before the baby arrives but I’ll be here as long as it takes. For now I’d like her to stay in bed. If she’s able, sleep might be something she should try. Mrs. Billings and I will be downstairs. You can stay with her and call me if needed.”

The presence of Paul Martin, M. D. provided a comfort for Adam. He thanked him and then sat by Claire’s side.

“The contractions will begin to become a little more severe and regular as time passes but nothing for you to be worried about. I’ve spoken to Claire and by the look on your face, I think she can help you through this,” he grinned and closed the door behind him.

The reading of poetry continued while Claire listened with her eyes closed. Adam’s words became a distant sound as Claire reflected on all that had taken place in her life. She believed her adoptive parents and her natural mother were looking down on this event and sharing in this moment. She thought of Shelley and ‘four’.

Horses pulled up outside. Ben and the sons arrived after a much debated conversation. Ben had suggested they wait until the morning but Hoss and Joe felt differently. Finally with a broad grin on his face he agreed and had said, “Let’s get saddled.”

Doc Martin opened the door to meet Ben.

“How is she Paul?”

“She’s doing as well as she can,” Doc Martin replied.

“Good, good,” said Ben. “Do you think we can see her? I’m assuming Adam’s with her.”

“I suspect that would be fine for the time being but she’s going to need her strength so I don’t want your visit to be too long. I’d like her to rest as best she can.”

“We understand.”

The soft knock on the door was answered by Adam. He was pleased to see his father, brothers and Hop Sing. They entered the softly lit room as if walking on egg shells.

Ben whispered,” How’s she doing?”

“She’s doing well according to Doc,” Adam responded. His brother’s eyes and Hop Sing’s were focused on the dark curls splayed upon the pillow and the soft features that seemed content at the moment.

Claire turned her head and smiled at the sight of all of her Cartwright men and Hop Sing.

Ben went to her side and took her hand. His happiness shown in his face. “We’re only going to stay for a moment. Paul says you need to rest but we wanted you to know we’re all here for both you and Adam.”

The smile she returned was a gift. “Thank you Dad.” Turning her head to the others she asked, “Have you decided what the baby will be?”

Hoss blushed when he spoke. “Whatever it is, you can be sure it will be truly loved.”

“It already is and I’m glad all of you are here.” She then looked at Hop Sing .

“I could use something from you Hop Sing.”

“Anything you want. You just name it. Hop Sing be happy to do for you.”

Claire asked him to prepare her a cup of tea.

What seemed odd to Adam was the fact Joe seemed more nervous than any off them. He was fidgeting and moving from one foot to the other. Claire felt another contraction coming and held Adam’s hand until it was over. She breathed more easily now and looked at the faces.

“Ahh Claire we’re going to leave you for now but we’ll be right here. Wouldn’t want to miss the arrival,” Ben added.

Joe and Hoss spoke very simple words. A lasting look of confidence between Claire and Hoss said more than if he’d opened his mouth. Hoss merely touched her shoulder and the Cartwright men left the room.

Joe sighed as he sat down in a chair. “This is more than I expected … been there when a foal arrived … this is really different.”

“It would be Joe since Claire isn’t a horse,” Hoss added.

Mrs. Billings laughed and Hop Sing headed up the stairs with the tea.

Evening became night and night became the time that was neither night nor morning. Claire’s contractions became bigger and more painful. Maggie returned and immediately went to see her.

Perspiration was forming on her brow which Adam wiped away. Doc Martin advised Claire was moving along well but a little slower than he hoped. Maggie understood and remained with Adam and Claire through the next three contractions.

The intensity of each contraction and its effect was visible in Adam’s eyes. Maggie understood the look as they tried to comfort her. Doc Martin needed to examine Claire’s progress and Adam and Maggie went down the stairs with the others.

Each Cartwright had seated themselves in various corners of the room with their own personal thoughts. Their eyes were on Adam and wondered.

Adam said little but his look spoke volumes. He took a look toward the stairs and then went onto the porch. All signs of his nervousness and concern were under his surface but the family could imagine what he was going through.

Ben joined him on the porch. The cool air of the night was refreshing. Adam breathed it in and looked off into it.

“Adam?” Ben said quietly as he approached him. “This is a hard part for a man especially when it’s the first baby.”

Adam listened carefully to his pa.

“We all want this to be easy. If I recall, the waiting was the hardest part for me. The other part was wanting the pain of being born into life to be easy.”

“I wish there was more I could do for Claire.”

He placed his hand on Adam’s shoulder and continued. “Son, your being here for her is more than you can imagine. I’m sure if you think about it, it’ll be more than obvious. You’re just not seeing it now. Just think about it. I’m not going to say don’t worry – I’m afraid it goes with the territory.”

Adam smiled and the two of them walked back into the house. From the time labor started five hours had passed.

Hop Sing placed coffee, sandwiches and fruit on the table. He then positioned himself and joined the others in their vigil.

Moans from upstairs drifted downward. Adam bit his lip and closed his eyes. Hoss stopped chewing. Joe’s eyes got larger. Ben looked at his son. Maggie, wished it was over. Mrs. Billings summoned Adam.

Tiredness was evident on Claire’s face as Adam entered the room. He looked at Doc Martin waiting for him to say something.

“Adam, we’re entering the last phase now. I wish I could tell you how long but that’s not possible. I’m going to let you stay with Claire for a while then I’ll have to ask you to leave and wait with the others downstairs until it’s over.”

Their new bedroom was now outfitted with items necessary for the birth of his child. His heart was racing. The moaning from Claire brought him back to the moment and he immediately went to her side.

Brushing away her perspiration along with her hair he took hold of her hand and kissed her. She returned it and tried to smile.

“I’m so sorry you’re in such pain.”

Keeping her sense of humor amidst the pain Claire responded, “So am I.”

They shared a lingering and tender kiss. “Adam, I so happy our baby is going to be born in this house. You labored to build it. Now I’m laboring to fill it.”

Adam couldn’t contain his laughter. Claire joined him. The laughter was refreshing for them both. Love flowed from each to the other.

Adam laid his head next to hers on the pillow. He placed one arm around her head and held her hand with the other. Claire held Adam’s arm and felt his tender kisses and the soft whisperings in her ear.

The force of Claire’s hands on his arm tightened as she buried her head against him when felt a combination of back pain along with a contraction that caused her to cry out. With all his strength Adam held her for the duration. Their eyes focused on each other. Claire breathed heavily and Adam wiped her brow and face.

Adam felt a hand on his shoulder. It was Doc Martin. Not wanting to leave her, Adam kissed her and told her how much he loved her. All he’d been able to do was hold her hand at that moment and be alone with his worry in the softly lit bedroom. Mrs. Billings closed the door.

Adam stopped at the foot of the stairs. “I’ll be waiting with all of you now.”

Joe ushered his brother to the table and poured him a cup of coffee and placed a sandwich in front of him. He stared at it and said nothing. Waiting was so hard.

The next hour seemed to be the longest. Tiredness was settling in for the Cartwright men. Adam wondered how tired Claire must be at this time. He moved to a comfortable chair in the great room and waited. Closing his eyes he said nothing.

The last phase of delivery was something Claire would have gladly done without. She felt as if something was squeezing around her middle which took her breath away. Her back pain was as if someone was standing on it.

Doc Martin and Mrs. Billings started to prepare. Claire’s back felt as if were going to explode. The baby was making its way slowly into the world bringing with it great pain.

Claire’s cries in pain, although somewhat muffled, could be heard. Adam leaned forward and placed his head in his hands. Neither brother knew what to do. Ben just motioned they should stay in place.

Doc Martin ensured Claire she’d not remember the pain when the baby arrived. Mrs. Billings supported Claire and tried to counsel her.

Adam rose from his seat and started pacing. “Why is it taking so long?” he said under his breath.

Doc Martin positioned Claire and asked her if she felt like pushing. The response was yes. The pain flowing through Claire was something she never imagined. She was perspiring and her face had reddened. Mrs. Billings continued to hold Claire and wipe her face with a cool cloth.

Finally Doc Martin said, “Good Claire. You’re doing fine. Rest a bit before we try pushing again.”

Claire’s breathing was becoming labored. She was tired and in pain. Mrs. Billings looked at Paul Martin. He nodded. She lifted Claire and the pillows upright and Doc Martin spoke again. “Claire I want you to push again and stop when I say so. OK?”

Claire’s eyes focused on him and she shook her head yes.

The next push wasn’t easy for Claire. She was more than tired and felt she didn’t have the strength. What she did have was pain.

“OK Claire that was good. We’re almost there,” Doc Martin said with confidence and feeling. “I know you’re tired and uncomfortable, but we’re going to get this baby here shortly. Just trust me.”

Doc Martin’s demeanor was gentle and caring. He worked efficiently and with a serene look on his face. This was a comfort to Claire.

It was now eight hours from the time labor started. Adam was more than beside himself.

Maggie went to him, “Adam, I’m sure it’s almost over. Claire is going to be fine. I know it’s hard, but try to relax if you can.”

The thank you she received from Adam was sincere. He tried to offer a smile.

Doc Martin and Mrs. Billings were busy. Claire was moaning in distress.

“Claire, I know it’s hard but we’re almost there. I can see the baby’s head. I need you to push again when I tell you.”

Claire was breathing as if she’d run a marathon. She wanted it to be over. If she had her way, she’d offer Adam a few choice words for putting her through this.

“OK Claire, I need you to take a deep breath and push as hard as you can.”

He wants me to breath. Is he kidding? Claire thought.

“Push Claire,” he ordered. “Keep pushing.”

Claire strained with all her might. It was over. She lay back and closed her eyes.

The sound of a baby’s cry drifted into the hearts of all who waited.

NINETEEN

Adam was on his feet facing the sound. He sighed heavily and ran his hands through his hair. Eyes once heavy revealing every emotion within his being were now opening to a new realization … a baby. The wait was over. The weight holding him captive lifted. The drumming of his heart stopped and he smiled.

Only Adam could contain his joy with silence. He smiled and waited while his family surrounded him and offered congratulations and hugs. Excitement was an understatement in the darkness of the night.

Adam bowed his head and gave thanks. He wanted to see Claire and know she was alright. Ben knew what his son was thinking and hugged him. Worries were something Ben assured Adam needed to be cast aside.

“Well I guess your nights of sleeping are over,” Joe said rubbing his brother’s shoulder.

“Sleeping don’t matter when a youngin’s needing some loving care. It just comes naturally,” Hoss added.

“Oh? And I suppose you don’t need sleep? Kind of hard to believe since I saw you sleeping in that chair over there just a minute ago,” Ben teased.

They were proud men … righteous men … Cartwright men … standing tall … four of them on the verge of embracing new life. What was more miraculous than that? What was more telling than the four Cartwright men together at this time and in this place?

Adam walked to Maggie who was smiling behind the hands that she’d rung over the last two hours. She was joyful and had taken on Claire’s traits. Her eyes were filled with tears of joy.

The embrace between Adam and Maggie was more than an exchange of happiness. It was an expression of love and the end of a trip that started in St. Louis and wound its way like a flowing stream through the easy and rough spaces of life’s tributaries. They held each other for a long time. Maggie quietly let her tears fall and Adam stroked her back gently.

Breaking the embrace, the calming lamps in the room reflected the tenderness felt by Maggie. She managed a smile and said, “I’m happy for the both of you – so truly happy.”

Adam gave her the smile of a proud father. He needed to see his wife and meet his child.

The buzz in the room was quiet yet active. Any tiredness felt was washed away. Hop Sing bowed deeply as he offered his congratulations to Adam. Adam returned the gesture and then hugged the man who’d been so integral in his life and that of Claire.

The sound of footsteps was heard coming down the stairs. Mrs. Billings was carrying some linen and other things. Adam walked quickly to her and his heart started to race once again.

“Claire? How is she?”

With a gentle smile she replied, “She’s fine Adam – tired but fine. You have a beautiful baby I think you might like to meet. Paul says you can come up now.”

Without looking back he scaled the stairs and walked quietly into the room that contained his life. Paul congratulated Adam and said both mother and baby were fine.

“Thank you Paul,” Adam said as he shook his hand.

Smiling Doc Martin picked up his things and said, “I hope there’s some coffee downstairs. I’ll check in on her again in a little while.” He gently closed the door.

Adam stood a distance from the bed for a moment and looked at the sight before him. The lamps had been lowered but highlighted the face of a sleeping Claire. Another memory he embraced.

Slowly and quietly he moved to the bedside and pulled his chair quietly next to it. All of his life experiences had not prepared him for this moment. His heart was full as he took her resting hand in his. He stroked her dampened brow and raised her hand to his lips. “I love you Claire.”

His focus was on her when from out of his subconscious he spoke words said centuries before by Socrates – “Not life, but good life, is to be chiefly valued.”

Claire opened her eyes and smiled at Adam. The tenderness on his face complimented the dark stubble beginning to grow. He kissed her hand again and then rose to kiss her lips.

“Ummmm,” replied a tired Claire.

“Sweetheart are you alright?”

The brightness of her smile gave him the answer.

Claire removed her hand from his and slowly pulled back the blanket that swaddled their child. “Here’s someone you’ve been waiting to meet.”

Adam was filled with awe as he looked at the beautiful baby resting in Claire’s arm. There was a sense that all the pain that had been in that room was already being repaired, the night of tension disappearing in a soothing wash of forgetfulness, a memory stitched together so the two of them could inaccurately look back on this experience with fondness. Indeed, a miracle.

Claire was beaming as Adam rested his face against hers and they looked into the baby’s eyes. Neither said anything for a long time.

“It’s a boy Adam. We have a son.”

Both quietly shed tears of joy in this moment. Adam walked around to the other side of the bed and gently picked up his son. The small infant wriggled as he held him to his chest. His son turned his head and opened his eyes. I know you. I guess I’ve always known you, Adam thought.

Claire could not imagine what Adam was feeling. For the first time she was dumbfounded. He sat down on the bed and touched the cheek on this tiny extension of him … the product of a union of love between he and Claire.

The baby sensed the finger and moved his head trying to find it. Claire smiled as tiny fingers wrapped themselves around Adam’s finger. Through misty eyes Adam said, “Welcome son. You’re loved,” and kissed him gently. My son!

Watching the miracle before them, Claire asked, “Since we have a son, shall we name him what we decided?”

Adam smiled. Through warm loving eyes, he said, “Welcome home Jared Michael Cartwright.”

TWENTY

Weary, but the tiredness and discomfort was fading as the sounds of new life were being enjoyed, Adam looked at his son. His hair was dark with highlights and signs of slight curling at the back of his neck. A tiny round belly and a dimple in his chin just like his. He wrapped the blanket back and listened to the small noises. Jared!

A soft knock on the door announced a smiling Doc Martin.

“I’m sorry for the interruption, but wanted to check on the three of you,” he said with a smile.

Although tired Claire smiled. When she did, the tiredness and discomfort seemed to flow out into the night as if it never existed.

Adam held the small infant as if it would break.

“Adam I’d like to check Claire once more.” Realizing he was still caught up in the wonder of the life he held in his hands, Doc Martin continued. “You can stand over there with him if you’d like.”

Adam looked at Claire and Doc Martin and then turned his back and walked over to the window that faced what would reveal sunrises in their future. The small fingers formed a fist and searched for a mouth. Adam lightly touched the lips with his finger and smiled.

Finished, Doc Martin adjusted the covers on Claire and said, “You’ll need rest Claire. You had a strenuous night bringing this little person into the world.”

“I am tired and a little uncomfortable, but we have family anxiously waiting to meet Jared Michael. Can they come up?”

He gave a simple nod of the head and said, “For a short while. Mrs. Billings will stay after I leave to help you with the baby. She’s very good at helping new mothers.”

Knowing Mrs. Billings would be staying was a relief. Aunt Maggie had to be tired and also in need of rest thought Claire. Getting home and resting was what she needed. Thank goodness Uncle Hank could lend a hand with Shelley.

Placing the baby back into Claire’s arms, Adam walked down the stairs with Doc Martin. He’d lost track of how much time had passed and forgotten about family waiting for the news.

Family was hovering about the great room expressing opinions as to whether it was a boy or a girl. Hoss and Joe were at it again – “Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl! Cartwright genes.”

Ben and Maggie understood this moment and the time being shared between Adam and Claire. They understood but were anxious for some news.

Hop Sing sat quietly with a smile on his face. He was excited but in a different way. His thoughts turned to words from his native land. Looking at the family members he remembered, “I know why families were created, with all their imperfections. They humanize you. They are made to make you forget yourself occasionally, so that the beautiful balance of life is not destroyed.”

The appearance of Adam caused Hop Sing to whisper quietly, “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade.”

The announcement was made as Doc Martin tried to get out of the way. “It’s a boy!”

It may have been the middle of the night but seemed more like the Fourth of July. Smiles, congratulations, back slapping, and hugging were exchanged between all of them. The grin on Adam’s face was powerful.

Ben released him from a hearty hug and placed his hands on his shoulders. “Son, you know how I feel. There’s so much for you to experience. This is just the beginning. I don’t say this often, but I’m very proud of the man you are and the father you’ll be. I … I … I love you Adam.”

Touching his father Adam said very quietly, “I am the man I am because of you.”

Within minutes a trail of family quietly made their way up the stairs as if thieves in the night. They hardly made a sound. The door was opened equally as quietly and Adam peeked in. Slowly he opened the door as the audience entered.

Claire held the baby but her eyes were closed. The whispering tones invited her to open them.

The image of her and the baby became a defining moment in all of their lives. Slowly they spread apart in the bedroom and looked at mother and baby as if this was a dream … not real. What they’d waited for through all the months had arrived and this moment seemed surreal to them.

Adam stood by Claire’s side as she pulled the blanket down so they could see the new arrival.

“Claire and I would like you to meet Jared Michael Cartwright.”

As quickly as they’d found their own private spaces in the bedroom, they now approached with various looks of joy on their faces.

“Oh Claire,” Maggie said. “He’s so beautiful.”

Joe looked and felt a pang in his stomach. For him the experience of seeing a new life just under an hour old was overwhelming. Sensitivity he’d not felt for some time engulfed him. Ever so quietly he spoke. “He’s gonna really be something. I’m just tickled to death. Another Cartwright!”

Hop Sing looked at the baby with tears in his eyes. This day was special in so many ways. He remembered Adam growing up and now he’d see his son grow. “Missy Claire, I very happy. Daughter, and now son. Child loved will be full of greatness.”

Hoss stood looking at the pride in his oldest brother. So much Adam had given to him and the family. He’d now be a father that would be caring and loving. He was glad something that could never be measured had been given to him through Claire.

“I can’t remember when I saw anything so little,” Hoss said. “Least wise not a baby.”

Joe piped up. “It’s not something Hoss. It’s our nephew – a baby – and he won’t be small for long.”

Hoss sniffed and said, “Can I hold him?”

Hoss wiped his hands on his pants, and as if experienced, picked Jared up. “Little fella, you don’t ever have to worry about nothin’. Especially being loved.” He kissed his nephew and tears fell down his cheeks.

Ben placed his hand on Hoss’s back and leaned in to look at Jared. He, too, had tears in his eyes. A gentleness poured out of him as he said, “Jared Michael Cartwright, I’m your grandpa. You have a special family and a special ma and pa.”

Taking Jared from Hoss, Ben held him and started whispering quietly to the newest member of the family.

“Well do we have your approval on the end result?” teased Adam.

“Adam, there’s no question that he’s a beaut. If you want my opinion ….

Hop Sing interrupted, “Mista Hoss, don’t think need for your opinion now.”

The laughter was the mark of a continuing celebration. This time a celebration of life.

Joe sat at the foot of the bed and asked how the name was decided on.

“It’s a long story but what Adam and I decided on,” Claire responded.

“Just to be fair to Hoss, since I knew all the time it was going to be a boy, what was the name if it had been a girl?” quizzed Joe.

Claire excused herself for being rude, but asked Hoss to bend down next to her. Quietly she whispered the name into his ear. As he stood up he smiled and walked away with a broad grin to the consternation of Joe.

“C’mon Hoss. Ya gotta share it,” pleaded Joe.

The family remained for several minutes more. Again congratulations were given mixed with awe and relief. It was clear Claire was tired and it appeared Jared was hungry. Time for Mrs. Billings and Aunt Maggie.

Ben looked at the ‘new’ family. Just as he was about to leave he said, “The significance of a birthday, Jared’s birthday, is often hidden … but like all of my sons, Jared was born with potential and purpose,” he paused.

“The choices we make and our ability to act on opportunities govern the shape and spectrum of our life. It’s up to all of us to help him become the person he is destined to be.”

“Thanks pa,” were the last words any of them heard from Adam as the door was closed.

The hoots and howls reverberated through the dense walls as they made their way down the stairs.

TWENTY-ONE

The Cartwright men departed for home. Aunt Maggie departed to tend to herself and Shelley. Mrs. Billings rested in an upstairs bedroom not far from the parents and baby. The family settled in for the evening, or what was left of it. Quiet blanketed the new family but changes in lives would waffle in the air for days to come.

Adjustments had come fast and furious for Adam and Claire Cartwright. In the midst of it all, they managed. Now the newest adjustment of all would change them once again. Limits and boundaries were non-existent in their lives. It wasn’t part of them nor would it be in the future.

Wanting something is not enough. You must hunger for it. Your motivation must be absolutely compelling in order to overcome the obstacles that will invariably come your way. This was the truth Adam lived and the truth Claire shared.

* * * * * *

The morning routine at the Ponderosa was delayed. The members were making up for lack of sleep. Slowly they awakened and one by one made their way toward the aroma of fresh hot coffee.

Lack of sleep seemed not to have affected Hop Sing. He moved gingerly about the kitchen preparing breakfast and a basket of goodies for the new parents. He peeked out of the kitchen when he heard footsteps. Hoss was rubbing his head as each foot hit a step. Without any delay and with a smile on his face, Hop Sing placed a cup of the hot liquid on the table.

Joe and Ben arrived a few minutes later. They were laughing and the conversation was lively. More coffee was delivered to the breakfast table along with piping hot food. They helped themselves to generous servings and mulled over the events of the evening.

Joe was still curious about what Claire had whispered to Hoss. Ben was curious as well but said nothing. He buttered his bread and looked at his two sons. If Hoss wished to share he would. He’d be the last to push.

The chair opposite Ben had initially signaled the son who no longer dwelled at the Ponderosa. This morning, for some reason when Ben viewed it, he didn’t see it as a loss but rather as growth of his family. He bit into his bread and realized the chair was empty so that all their lives could be filled.

Hoss had his fill of the breakfast repast and placed his hands on the table. He looked at his brother and poured another cup of coffee.

“Joe I don’t want you to bust a gusset. Claire did whisper a name to me I think because you made such a fuss about the baby being a boy.”

“What’s that got to do with anything?”

“Maybe a lot. Maybe nothing at all.”

Ben just watched and listened to the discussion.

“I’m gonna let you off the hook little brother. Don’t want you getting ornery and staying that way.”

Joe rolled his eyes at this comment. “You don’t have to tell me! You don’t have to tell pa! It’s your secret so you can keep it to yourself.”

“Nah, I can’t do that. Claire asked me not to.”

Ben put his cup down and Joe stopped chewing.

“If it had been a girl she and Adam were going to name her Erica … Erica Marie.”

Smiles all around digested what Hoss told them along with their food.

They laughed when Joe said, “It might have been nice if it had been a girl.”

Mrs. Billings was an enormous help to Claire. Understanding the knack of feeding Jared and other helpful tips first hand was needed. There was no comparison to listening and trying versus understanding the ‘how to’s’ and doing.

The quiet awakened Adam. He looked over the extension of him now sleeping peacefully. At this moment the night before seemed only a dream. Another piece of himself he didn’t know existed had broken through his being. He smiled as he put his robe on and walked to the cradle. Wrapped and sleeping as peacefully as his mother, was his son.

This was the first day of a new chapter being written. In the morning light Jared appeared different. He was real … breathing slowly and full of life. The little hands were balled into fists next to his head. Adam kneeled down and gently touched the blanket that covered him. He knew the reality of a father’s love – first with Shelley and now with the son of his own seed.

Jared moved slightly and yawned. Adam smiled as the birdlike mouth moved. He stroked Jared’s small hand which immediately grasped his finger and feeling his son’s touch thought.

“It was hard for me as a child to tell my father what I really felt. I didn’t want to hurt him. I didn’t want to be disrespectful. I felt too often he would not believe what HE thought and felt was valuable. As I look at you, I now understand as a parent it may be hard for me to let you be who you’re really meant to be … a person with your own thoughts, feelings and dreams. I hope this will not be the truth … that I can be better than that for you.

I want to protect you. I want to give you the best. I want to consider whether the things I want for you are the things you’ll want for yourself. What I may fear for you may not be something you come to fear for yourself. My son, you have the right to choose to search, explore and decide, and I know you will have the stamina it takes to fall down and get up again. I promise you I will do more than listen to you. I will hear you.”

Slowly and quietly Adam left the room to wash and dress. He smelled coffee and heard quiet voices downstairs.

Mrs. Pickett arrived to start her daily duties. She was surprised at the occurrences of the night before and was all ears as Mrs. Billings recounted the details. Adam peeked in – both mother and baby were still sleeping. He headed downstairs but stopped at the top of the stairs. The house was now a home. The arrival of Jared left a blank canvass when he was ready to enter the world.

This morning Adam saw a painted canvass filled with all the appointments of a finished painting. He was sure Claire would change some things, add some things, and pull it together. The leather chair he loved but she hated, he was sure would be moved into his study. He nodded to himself as his eyes took in the view before him.

This home was born in his mind and furnished by he and Claire. He slowly walked down the stairs and breathed it all in remembering the words Claire shared with him – “A home is really a home when you furnish it with memories, friends, love for learning, and other such things. If we ever leave it for whatever reason, it will always take the journey with you.”

Adam joined the two ladies in the kitchen. “Can I get a cup of coffee?”

Mrs. Pickett congratulated him as Mrs. Billings poured the coffee. She’d also prepared a breakfast tray for Claire. The conversation was limited as Mrs. Billings needed to leave. Adam clearly understood and expressed his appreciation for all she’d done. She said her goodbyes to Mrs. Pickett and advised Adam that she’d return in two days. If he needed her before that time, all he need do was send for her.

Mrs. Pickett busied herself as Adam took the tray to Claire. Upon opening the door he found Claire awake and looking at the baby. Her gaze turned to the man with breakfast.

“I’m hungry. Did you think of this all by yourself?”

He kissed her as she propped herself up and then placed the tray on her lap.

“I’m afraid I can’t take credit for it,” he said as he bit into a piece of bacon.

Before Adam could form his mouth to ask, Claire said, “I know that look in your eyes. I’m feeling much better and I’d like to get out of bed for a little while.”

Adam was not going to offer any argument.

The day for them was filled with both learning and happy experiences. Jared seemed to wake almost every four hours or so and kept them busy. He wasn’t lacking for attention. Claire sat in the rocker with him and when she rested, Adam took over or Mrs. Pickett.

Jared enjoyed being clean. Adam watched as Claire bathed and clothed him. Showing Adam how to change a diaper was a comedic adventure. After the fourth time of trying to handle this act he managed to get it partially right. Claire and Mrs. Pickett kidded him particularly when the son showered the father. Finally Adam just commented roping a steer was easier than trying to put a diaper on a moving baby.

The day came and went. Mrs. Pickett warmed the meal Hop Sing prepared and said she’d return in the morning. In the dimly lit bedroom, Claire rocked a securely wrapped baby as he fell asleep.

Adam lifted him and carefully placed him in the cradle. Without speaking he extended his hand to Claire and guided her to bed. Once settled he washed and joined her.

“You need to rest sweetheart. You’ll be needed in a few hours.”

She rested her head against his shoulder. They’d spoken of it earlier in the day when Claire’s Aunt Maggie and Uncle Hank visited. They missed Shelley and wanted her home.

“Shelley?” asked Adam.

There was a nod of her head.

“I know. I’m going for her in the morning after Mrs. Pickett gets here. It’s time for her surprise and we said only two days.”

Adam kissed and embraced Claire. As they settled under the covers they quietly spoke of children. They understood much about Shelley. She was a child that showed signs of liking to think for herself which they weren’t sure they liked but was a part of her. They’d come to terms with the fact they didn’t have the answers for the reasons children acted the way they did.

Their family had come full circle for them now. What they agreed upon was realizing the differences between discipline and thinking, disobedience and thinking, disrespect and thinking. A child was just a person living in a smaller body. For them both Shelley and Jared would need to learn to express themselves, understand who they were and grow into who they would be through their own thoughts. Just because their children might not think or act as they felt they should, did not mean they would be wrong.

Sleep came for the moment.

The second day of their new chapter flowed much better. It was a beautiful spring day, and life although not back to what one might consider normal, was moving in that direction.

With the assistance of Mrs. Pickett, Claire managed to move out of bed downstairs. The sun shone brightly through the windows and she felt rejuvenated. Her energy level had returned and she was the epitome of a radiant mother. Mrs. Pickett enjoyed her moments with Jared. There was one thing missing that would make life better. Shelley.

Adam whistled as he put his hat on and headed off the get Shelley. Kissing Claire he asked, “What do I get for making the family complete?”

“What you want and what you may get are two different things.” She pushed Adam on his way.

The posture of Adam on his horse was that of a man filled with pride. He pushed the animal with a bit of urgency. Hearing the sound of hoof beats, Maggie looked up and Shelley watched as the figure approached. She realized it was her papa.”

“Papa! Papa!”

Adam smiled as he heard her voice and quickly dismounted. He grabbed his daughter into a hug and kissed her. “How’s my girl?” He realized at this moment how complete his life truly was.

Continuing to hold Shelley in his arms, he walked over to Maggie. She kissed him and asked him to come into the house. Hank was coming through the back door with a pinwheel he’d made for Shelley. Seeing Adam, he smiled and realized that the visitor was now going to leave. Shelley had been a treat for the two of them and he’d actually enjoyed their conversations. He’s also taught her a few new words.

Shelley went with Maggie to get her bag.

“Congratulations Adam. I can’t stop saying it.”

“I appreciate it Hank. We’re very happy. I would be hard pressed to say life could be any better.”

“I’d have to agree with that.”

Shelley made noise coming down the stairs. She had her pinwheel and teddy bear in tow. Maggie followed her.

“Well for a visitor who couldn’t wait to get here, she seems in a hurry to leave,” Maggie smiled.

“Claire and I thank both of you. We just missed her and we need her at home,” Adam smiled.”

“Well it’s been fun having her and we hope she can stay with us again whenever you need us.”

“It’s time for us to go home now Shelley. Mama’s waiting for you. Have you been good?”

Shelley looked at her aunt and uncle and then back at Adam. “Been exllent.”

Hearing the word ‘excellent’ in Shelley manner caused Adam to raise an eyebrow. He saw the grin on Hank’s face. “Just one of the words I taught her.”

“Well if Uncle Hank says you were excellent, then I believe him. For being ‘excellent’ mama and I have a gift for you. So now we need to go home so you can see it. OK?”

“Is baby for me?”

“It’s a baby for all of us.”

Embraces exchanged, Adam took Shelley in tow. She’d ride in front of him on the horse because he hadn’t taken the carriage. They were all settled and with bright smiles left for home. Shelley marveled at how the pinwheel turned as they rode.

The journey back was at a leisurely pace. Adam was pleased to have Shelley with him and wondered what her reaction would be at meeting her new brother. He started a discussion with her about her time away and listened carefully as she answered his questions. He changed the conversation to the baby.

Claire finished feeding Jared and placed him in the cradle. She was anxious for their family to be together. Mrs. Pickett excused herself and went outside to inspect the areas Claire wanted to plant flowers.

Claire spoke to Jared as she rocked the cradle. She was certain he knew her voice. In just a little less than two days, she noticed changes in him. She was certain the dimple in his chin would remain and noticed the intensity of his eyelashes. He was a beautiful baby.

The door opened and Shelley ran in followed by Adam.

“Shelley! I’m so happy your home,” Claire exclaimed as she hugged her. I’ve really missed you.”

“Happy be here,” she grinned holding up her pinwheel.

The sound of the baby caught Shelley’s attention. She was a bit confused and followed the sound. She looked at Jared with curiosity. Adam placed his arm around Claire and watched as Shelley looked at the small person in front of her. In her mind it was a doll – but a doll that moved. She turned to her parents with a look of wonder on her face.

Claire removed Jared from his cradle and took Shelley’s hand. She explained that Jared was a gift for all of them. He was her brother and he loved her. They loved her and knew she would love him.

The habit of using her finger to poke things still remained a part of her. Shelley took her finger and touched him. He moved and she smiled. She touched him again and he moved his hands. She laughed.

The parents explained to her that this was the fourth member of the family. Shelley grinned and said, “Four.” That was the number Adam had taught her to count up to and it represented their family.

Carefully Claire took Shelley’s hand and assisted her in touching her brother. Jared moved his head in her direction and she touched his little hand. She took inventory of all his visible parts. He had hands. She had hands. He had fingers. She had fingers. He had a nose. She had a nose.

Claire kissed Shelley on the forehead and then kissed Jared on his forehead. Shelley laid her head on her mother and her large eyes focused on number four. She was happy.

Adam joined them and placing his hand on Shelley’s back said, “This is your brother. His name is Jared. You and I will help mama take care of him.”

“My name is Shelley.”

“Yes it is. His name is Jared. How do you like Jared?”

Turning to Adam Shelley said with a big smile, “Exllent.”

Claire was amazed. Adam told her he’d explain it all later.

Claire had been trying to teach Shelley the sound of letters and would spell her name. She now made the sound for the letter ‘j’ and spelled J-A-R-E-D.

Shelley picked up quickly on things. She looked at Jared and said, “Helyo J.”

Adam laughed and said although he didn’t care much for nicknames, he guessed their son now had one courtesy of Shelley.

The day wore on and Shelley had the opportunity to witness crying and diaper changing. Mrs. Pickett helped Claire while Adam tended to some outside chores. When he returned the house was quiet. Mrs. Pickett indicated there was lunch for him on the dining room table and that his family was upstairs resting. She offered him a smile and he returned it.

Quietly he wanted to look in on his family. Shelley was napping in her room. The pinwheel, which must have been in her hand, had fallen to the floor. He picked it up and placed it on the table next to her bed. He stroked her dark locks and then quietly walked across the hall.

Claire was asleep with Jared cuddled in her arms.

He walked back to eat the lunch waiting for him. He gave thanks and started to eat.

The silence of the moment was powerful for him as his mind wandered.

“I’ve never heard the sound of the sun come out in the morning. I never heard the moon come out last night. Was there a sound made when sperm and egg created the miracle of life? Power is not loud, forceful or aggressive. In silence I become attuned to the energies unheard and unseen surrounding me. I’m blessed. Silence allows my heart and head to cooperate with each other and move with the strength and power that flows within me. I have been silent about my hopes and dreams most of my life – but no more. Claire has and continues to silently support me. I love her. I love my daughter. I love my son. In the silence of the night, my dream came true.”

The End.
