* Day 4 *
Christmas Has Come
Soft falls the silent snow,
Slow, slow amidst the glow
Of campfire kindled and heart alight;
Bright, bright fire on a snowy night.
Round the fire we all sit,
Whilst snow flies and birds flit
With wide white wings against the sky;
Brown leaves crunch in the brush nearby.
Three for one and one for all,
Two tall and one small,
Brothers now and brothers forever;
Alone on this night in the woods together.
This one waxes like the moon,
Poetic soul with a melancholy tune.
The second with a heart of gold;
Tall as a mountain; young and old.
Smallest nestles like a chick
Beneath a wing of corduroy thick
And gold as the fire in his curls;
Lashes lowered, lush as a girl’s.
A babe so like that one long ago
Born in a bleak midwinter of snow;
Born to live and born to die;
A sacrifice to the One on high.
Safe at home in an ocean of red,
Well-worn leather cradles a weary head.
A hand reaches out to find the touch
Of the beautiful one he loved so much.
She is not there. She could not stay.
Heaven took his heart away,
Except for the heart beneath this wing;
The little chick for which this poet sings.
A question asked, an answer given.
Why has Mama gone to Heaven?
‘To sing with the angels’, I reply.
‘To worship Him who is on high.’
I hold his small chin in my fingers,
And while his tears on my flesh still linger
I point to the star that blazes above
Radiating with a mother’s love.
‘She’s here’, I whisper, my lips on his brow.
‘Your mother is here even now.
She’s a part no longer, but a whole.
She is your heart and is your soul.’
Soft falls the silent snow.
Slow, slow amidst the glow
Of campfire kindled and heart alight;
Bright, bright fire on a snowy night.
Round the fire we all sit
Whilst snow flies and birds flit.
In the distance midnight chimes.
Christmas has come in its own good time.
Beautiful!
