So much tragedy, so much love. This was a very riveting story with just the right touch of light-hearted scenes. The light-hearted parts that tickled me were where Adam said he was behaving and thinking more like LJ and Joe was sounding more like Adam. This was especially evident when Adam and Joe were talking.

Author’s Response:

I’m so glad you enjoyed this story, especially the Adam and Joe interaction! Thank you for letting me know!:)

This was a terrific story. Very much a roller coaster ride – who’s a good guy (or woman) who’s the bad guy. It was impossible to guess what would happen next – I love a story like that. This is a little different type of story for you and definitely an unusual topic – and I loved it all. Your characters were interesting and you made us care what happened to them. Thanks for sharing with us.

Author’s Response:

Thank you! It really was a roller coaster, wasn’t it? I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for letting me know!:)

Wow, another fantastic story from you. This was different from the regular stories as it dealt with a lot of characters, but it again showed that the Cartwrights were honorable men.

Very enjoyable story. Thank you.

Author’s Response:

Thank you! It was a lot of characters, wasn’t it? That made it challenging to keep the right balance to avoid confusing readers. I’m so glad it worked for you! Thank you for letting me know!:)

What can I say? I loved this story from the first word to the last. The flock of women probably was what I enjoyed the most (well written OCs are something to behold) or maybe the touch of other-worldliness that sometimes waved between the lines or the clever constructed plot or the precise character studies of all our beloved Cartwrights.

If I had one wish free then I’d loved to see Adam star in one of your storoes because your portrayal of him is excellent — and not only for a Joegal. 😉

Thanks a lot for this magnificent story!

Author’s Response:

Aw, faust! What wonderful comments! Thank you so very much! 😀 The flock of women was the starting point as the plot began to take shape in my head. The cabin and the link to The Storm came after, as I tried to decide what setting to use. Initially, I saw the fight beginning out in the open, with nothing but a covered wagon to protect poor Agnes and the newborn. Pa and Hoss didn’t even have roles in the early stages of that first iteration of the story in my head. Then I latched onto the cabin, and everything else fell right into place. As to Adam, I’m very glad you like my portrayal of him. I do love to get inside his head for some reason! 🙂 He sure took on a big role in this story, and could almost be said to star in it. Although the cabin and Laura are integral to the plot, Adam’s role is actually bigger than Joe’s. Mostly, Joe just gets to suffer. A lot. 😉 Frankly, I was thinking of reversing the roles in my next story, i.e. having Adam suffer and Joe save the day.

this is a powerhouse of a story. each of the women characters – so unique and each one brings something wonderful to the story. I loved the addition of Agnes and baby Laura. All the concurrent lines/themes make this story so interesting – women’s suffrage, Joe/Adam relationship, Joe/Laura……all intertwined so seamlessly. and of course, a litlte SJS on top of it all…thank you so much for this wonderful story

Author’s Response:

A “powerhouse”? Wow! What a compliment! Thank you very much! I’m very glad you enjoyed it so much, and delighted by your feedback! 🙂

I love the way you used selections from In Memoriam (which is an awfully uneven work IMO, though bits of it are excellent!) as an offering from Millie to help Joe through his difficult time, and I specially enjoyed the practical application Joe made of that advice–a lovely touch! This was a brilliant story from start to finish but your ending is particularly strong–thank you so very, very much!

Author’s Response:

Thank you so very, very much! It means a lot to me to hear such praise from you, as I respect and appreciate your eye for good writing (as well as your advice for improving the writing!). I agree that In Memoriam is an uneven work, and yes, parts truly are excellent. It’s almost a shame the great parts weren’t separated from the weak upon publication, but I’m sure every part was too close to Tennyson’s heart for him to let go.

  1. This cane across as a random story. At first I wasn’t going to read it – I thought I already had. I thought I read all your stories – I’m so glad I came back to check it out again. It was quite intense with a neat smattering of history. We don’t always remember what it was like for women who fought for their voices to be heard and to matter. Your OC’s were great – and fleshed out so differently from one another – I liked that a lot. I love the interactions of the Cartwright family and how protective they were of one another – and how their friends and employees rallied around them. I’m a Joe gal so was very happy with his part in the story – even if a good part of it was unconscious 😉. I’m so glad I found this all these years later. Thanks for posting it.

    1. Thank you, fras! It proved to be an interesting and challenging one to write. I’m glad you found it up to the challenge! 😉
