Great first Bonanza story, BWF! very well told. I now hope that you’ll give us an Adam story next time (hint, hint….); I think that would make me a very happy woman!

Author’s Response:

Faust, thank you for the welcome!  I have an original story in the works, and it is posted in The Reading Room.  It’s more of a Joe story with plenty of Adam and the whole family.  Once I’m finished I’ll post it in the Library.  Let me think on a story surrounding for Adam… (hint and challenge accepted)

A very enjoyable debut in the fandom, Bluewind Farm–I enjoyed your exploration of the relationship between Joe and Adam as well as the Joe-Hoss interactions, and of course the excellent concluding JPM! I’ll look forward to more of your stories–thank you for sharing this one!

Author’s Response:

SKLAMB, thank you very much for the hearty welcome and the high praises.  I’m looking forward to posting more stories as it has become addicting to write

Excellent first story here, Bluewind.  Loved how you caught Joe’s voice so well.  I haven’t seen that episode, but that didn’t detract here as the story stands on its own.  Joe’s self doubts were wonderfully conveyed, and his confusion was done beautifully.  It’s so like Joe to be led astray by a pretty face, even in the face of trouble.

Sorry it took me so long to get around to reading it, but I’m very pleased I did, and I hope you’ll be writing lots more here.
Author’s Response:

Inca, Thank you very much for the compliments; I appreciate them.  And it’s not been that long since I posted the story, so no need to apologize, I know that people have other lives besides reading fan-fiction (Shock, Gasp, Horrors, Egads!  ;0)  As for more stories… I am currently writing an original ‘Bonanza’ story and posted the beginning this afternoon in The Reading Room within the Forums — The Tears of Growing Up.

Excellant first BZ story and I can only hope there’ll be many more to come.  You had Joe to a T and that JPM at the end with Joe and his insecurities was so touching and true to the characters.  Great job BWF and you’re a welcomed addition to the library.  Thank you.
Author’s Response:

Dodo, Thank you very much for the compliments.  In the beginning I didn’t plan for the JPM at the end, but when it came time to address what I felt was lacking once Joe returned home during the episode, it just felt natural to have that moment.  I hope to add more to the library at some time.

I loved this wonderful story!!!

I hope you will write others for our pleasure!!!! Congratulations!!!

Author’s Response:

Maria, thank you for taking the time to read and leave a review. I hope to write more in the future, I just need to wait until I feel inspired to write; those stories are the easiest to write.  When I try to force a story, I struggle to write and the scenes do not flow…

Welcome to the library, BWF!  I enjoyed reading your story and hope you write more. Favorite paragraph:

“High tail away, yep, that’s where that expression comes from.  Bolting, four hooves thundering the ground, tail set like a flag on a pole streaming out horizontal as a stiff wind blew.  Self- preservation, it’s in all of us, man and animal, I just wished I’d have been as self-preserving as that horse. But no… I had to go and think about recovering the money and…  Damn, my canteen!  Putting my gun back in my holster, I bolted, no tail to flag, and ran for my open canteen… precious water spilling out the opening, all the while, I was trying to avoid being shot.”

Good stuff!

Author’s Response:

Cheaux, thank you for the welcome and the review.  I enjoyed writing this one, not sure exactly what inspired me to try to write it, but I’m glad I did.

Once I wrote ‘high-tailed it’, I decided to try to explain the meaning of the phrase to those who maybe hadn’t thought about what it meant or had witnessed it, but never paid it any attention. (I’ve witnessed my own horses high-tail it across the pasture on many occasions.) I think this scene is one of the first scenes where Joe starts to be mentally distracted due to the heat and lack of enough water, and then I had to bring his attention back to his situation…

Excellent, bwf!  You filled in the blanks nicely.  Glad to see you writing Bonanza.  We definitely need new Joe stories.  I’ve reread so many, I love seeing new ones coming forth!  Again – great job!

Author’s Response:

Thank you for the compliments, I’m glad I could fill the void.  I’ll have to wait and see if another episode inspires me to write a WHB/WHD/WHN story or maybe… I might decide to write something original.  Anyway, thank you for taking the time to read and review.

So very well done, Deanne, I applaud you on your very first BZ fanfiction. You have Joe perfectly and the tension in the story was excellent as were the touches of humour, nostalgia and affection asides for the other Cartwright members. I so enjoyed reading this story, thank you so very much. Looking forward to your next one … Best wishes, Krystyna

Author’s Response:

Krystyna, thank you for taking the time to read and review.  It is always difficult to know if how I chose to interpret the characters will be acceptable with the readers.  I’m so glad you agreed with my interpretation on Joe.  Until next time…

A dressage rider who's a cowgirl at heart. I wasn't old enough during the heyday of Westerns on TV. However, with the introduction of cable and satellite services in the 1980's, I fell in love with Bonanza, Lancer, The Big Valley, The Rifleman, and The Wild, Wild West, among others. Through syndication and fanfiction; our heroes will live on forever. I hope you enjoy the stories I've written, and I look forward to reading your comments.

  1. I just cannot believe that this was your first Bonanza fanfiction. It was wonderful in every way and more than did justice to that episode and what you created was better, in my opinion than the actual episode. I loved all of Joe’s musings as he tried to find the two evil people who did that terrible crime. Joe’s doubts and his remembrances give us a good look into what makes him Joe. Plus, his reflections to things he learned and experienced with both of his brothers and how he so wanted to measure up in his father’s eyes. If only MY first fanfiction attempt was one tenth of what this was, I would be most happy! Well written from start to a perfect ending.

  2. Really interesting story! I always wondered about what happened throughout when Joe was following them through the desert and you’ve written the perfect storyline.

  3. This was great! It comes from so many different directions — serious, a little silly, a bit of Where’s Waldo (my somewhat inaccurate metaphor for guessing where some of the Shakespearean phrases came from :-P). It’s amazing what our brain will decide to focus on when we’ve lost complete control of it — and also amazing that sometimes that loss of focus might have been just what was needed (though the accompanying loss of water in this case not so much) … 🙂

I enjoyed this, thanks for writing!

    1. PSW, It appears that you had as much fun reading as I did writing this one. This was the first story I wrote and posted for Bonanza Brand. Thank you for taking a moment to leave a comment. 🙂
