This is another reason I love FF, we can fill in what wasn’t shown on the show for whatever reason.  Great work of bringing Hoss and Joe into the fore.

Author’s Response:

Jojay, I agree with you on your sentiments regarding FF; I’m glad you enjoyed this peak at what wasn’t included in the episode.

I,m still glad that Adam didn’t marry that nit-wit Laura. She didn’t deserve this hard working educated cowboy. He had no choice in not spending more time with her. Besides work on a ranch cannot be left to take care of itself. It will become runned down like hers was. She ran off with the right man that worthless bum WILL CARTWRIGHT. A free-loadering scrub.

Author’s Response:

I think we’re all happy he did not marry Laura, it would have driven him away even sooner.

When a story draws heavily from an episode, I’ll often go to YouTube to get up to speed which I did. As a child viewer I recall having nothing but disdain for Laura and Will. So strong was that recollection that I almost didn’t want to watch the episode again. I’m so glad I did. The show did a superb job of portraying them sympathetically and I was touched by their plight and the grace with which they handled it.   So thanks for reintroducing me to a great episode 🙂

I really enjoyed your follow on and loved that you brought Hoss and Joe into the story. LOL at great line from Adam about Joe not being center of attention.   So sweet to see Joe watching out for his big bro and emerging from the shadows in his times of need. What a switcheroo.  Loved the jam and their having thoughtful conversation without sparks flying.  Thanks for sharing another great story with us, BWF.

Author’s Response:

I too was a child/later in life rerun viewer,  and didn’t have fond memories of Laura and Will for what happened.  But we all have to realize that Adam had loved her enough to want to marry her.  The “Laura and Peggy” story was told over a number of episodes and I think this one could have been spread into another in order to address a few of the issues that I briefly touched upon in this story.

I’m glad you gave the episode another go and realized that it wasn’t as bad as we believed. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and leaving your comments; they are appreciated.

A dressage rider who's a cowgirl at heart. Though I wasn't old enough during the heyday of Westerns on TV, with the introduction of cable and satellite services in the 1980's, I fell in love with Bonanza, Lancer, The Big Valley, The Rifleman, and The Wild, Wild West; among others. Through syndication and fanfiction; our heroes will live on forever. I hope you enjoy reading the stories I've written, and I look forward to reading your comments.

  1. Great job in exploring how Adam’s injury affected other members of the family especially Joe. Yes, good to get a more detailed explanation from Adam as to why he pushed Laura toward Will and how he felt about it after. Your description of what happened after he stood from that wheelchair and walked into the house was perfect and a far better way to see that action than to assume he was fine just because he could stand and walk a short distance.

    1. Betty, Thank you for reading and understanding what I was trying to convey through my writing.

  2. That was brillient. I never liked that episode but this story rounded it off very well, gave the original tale a warmth it didn’t have. Well done,

    1. G&M, I think there are quite a few viewers out there who were never happy with the episode or at least the actress they brought in to portray Adam’s love interest. And there were plenty of viewers who were disappointed with the lack of screen time for Joe. Perfect scenario for a fan-fiction story. Thank you for reading and for taking the time to leave a comment.

  3. A very plausible and satisfying ending told in the no nonsense tone of Adam’s used throughout the Laura episodes! I have always given thought to the lack of genuine warmth on his part toward Laura which is quite unlike him when it comes to women and I have come to the conclusion that he had no passion for her, no real plans for their future. That house was simply a rare occasion to use his extensive architectural knowledge and the whole relationship was based on two very lonely people who desperately needed a hope to live for yet they both came up short for each other. Adam is a very isolated and lonely soul that longs for a wife and family but we all know that Laura was DEFINITELY NOT the one and I am so glad that he didn’t get chained to her for the rest of his life!! Good job wrapping up the loose ends of the episode!

    1. Miss Kitty, thank you for leaving such a wonderful review. I think we can all be thankful that that marriage did not happen.
